A long article that I share with deep satisfaction. Jair Messias Bolsonaro (yes, that's his real full name) gets 27 years and 3 months sentence for trying to stage a coup in Brazil.

Bolsonaro Convicted of Attempting a Coup in Brazil, Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison

Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted the former president of trying to cling to power after losing the 2022 election, including a plan to assassinate his opponent.

(Kinda weird that almost all comments immediately try to switch the topic away from Brasil to the US. Is it really so hard to congratulate the people of Brasil and think for a second about what this means to them?)
@jwildeboer at least they manage to put their would-be dictators into jail

@jwildeboer Yeah, especially weird when Brazil is the 7th largest country on the whole planet, with around ~213,421,037 people.

If country of over 200+ million people is not worth talking about (for some people…), shouldn’t people only talk about China and India, as they have way more people than most others? šŸ˜…

@jwildeboer just don’t let him write a book in there.
@zaicurity @jwildeboer Adolf was 36 at the time, Jared is too old for that. Plus who reads books these days?

@jwildeboer

This is how justice looks like…

Trump should be next.

@jwildeboer so it's official - Brazil has a more functional legal system than the US.

How many hours until the orange dick tater announces new tariffs?

@jwildeboer printing out details of the murder plot didn’t help their ā€œoooh it was only w/in legal limitsā€ defense.

@jwildeboer
Over the last decade, the United States and Brazil both confronted illiberal threats. The parallels are striking. Both countries elected presidents with authoritarian instincts who, after losing re-election, went after democratic institutions.

Brazil did the right thing. America failed by not bringing Trump to justice and barring him from running for office.

The Brazilian Supreme Court did what the U.S. Senate and federal courts tragically failed to do.

@jwildeboer I'm so happy finally he will face the consequences! \o/
@jwildeboer (Being juvenile and probably totally inappropriate, but, snicker, I'm reading that as Messy-ass.)
@jwildeboer @Npars01 Id like to think he’d actually go to prison but I saw a headline already today that an amnesty deal is likely. I’m guessing there’s much pressure on those judges, the President anyone in high offices there by the Trump people and dark money bribes vs threats.
Inequality has risen from 1970 to Trump āˆ’ that has 3 hidden costs that undermine democracy

The Republican tax bill is set to worsen inequality, government data shows. It’s part of a 50-year trend that’s affecting the social fabric as well as the economy.

How come Brazil, not renowned for stable democratic government, can do this but the US cannot?
@jwildeboer
When I went for the elections Bolsonaro vs Haddad I was crying on the way back to the car... I can't stop smiling today ā˜ŗļø

@jwildeboer
Thanks for sharing that.

I must say, from that piece, it does look like the trial was rigged, with two of five judges directly linked to the current ruling party and president. There was clearly a plot for a coup, and yet one of the judges found the evidence linking it to Bolsonaro unconvincing. I fear that about half of the Brazilian population will also find the conviction unconvincing.

Bolsonaro is evil. Could he have been removed without shenanigans?
