The current Roberts Court is the culmination of a 40 year slow-burn project by the right to take over the court. They started building a stable of ideologically driven lawyers at ivy league law schools in the early Reagan era and got their first toehold on the court with Scalia. Then just kept chipping away at it, funneling pre-vetted candidates into clerkships in friendly offices, suggesting them for appointments to lower courts, slowly taking over more and more of the bench until they cemented it with Alito... now with the 3 trump appointments on top of it they're just drunk on their own power.
Yes I'm talking about the federalist society but not only them, they had allies.
Us on the left really REALLY need to get more invested in long term slow burn political projects like that. They have been deadly effective for the right. And we have no real counter equivalent. Always fascinated with chasing the one big grand revolution that never comes. The closest thing we had was the 30 year off-and-on push for healthcare reform that culminated in Obamacare passing during the only Democratic supermajority of my lifetime.
