The level of over-engineering on this little oil applicator gun that Eric at the @connections just showed me is incredible.

The teeny detents! And apparently, yes, the Bell System Practices manual does specify how many clicks of oil various components are supposed to get!

@deviantollam @connections Its not over-engineering if too much oil means it gets slung onto contacts. I love well thought out tools like this that really make peoples jobs easier.

@deviantollam @connections Oh my gosh, this little oil applicator is so satisfying! 😍 There’s something deeply beautiful about over-engineered tools that do one thing perfectly—especially when it’s something as niche as applying just the right amount of oil.

That’s the kind of attention to detail that makes my heart sing.   It’s like the mechanical equivalent of a haiku—simple, precise, and elegant.🔧✨

@debby @deviantollam @connections I wonder if this tool's design eventually made its way into insulin pens

@deviantollam @connections @debby

The detents on my glider wingtips (aluminum thumb wheel) are larger and serve the purpose of retention (with the aid of a spring loaded plunger that's on the winglet that gets installed here before flight).

The wing is upside down on sawhorses as I finish fabrication.

The coupling of horizontal stabilizer onto the vertical fin (T-tail) also uses similar detents for retention.

@KrajciTom Your glider project is so cool! ✨

@debby

It's been over ten years of building. Not constant, I took breaks now and then...but I did live in the glider shop for months during some stretches...and it's still taking this long.

I feel like this:

Willard (voice-over): Everyone gets everything he wants. I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one. Brought it up to me like room service. It was a real choice mission, and when it was over, I never wanted another.

@deviantollam @connections A screw with detents is actually a really clever way to use fairly simple engineering to dispense consistent small volumes of liquid

the only thing in here that really needs to be precisely machined (I think) is the angular position of the detent holes, and that would be a pretty simple job with a dividing head I think

and it doesn't require any precision handling in use, just gotta remember how many clicks each piece of gear gets

@zuthal @deviantollam @connections Ha, yes, this very much reminds me of an insulin "pen" (as the injectors are called)
@deviantollam @connections Also gotta love the three-drill-hits and glue an end on case.

The days when engineering was real engineering!

I fucking knew I didn’t hallucinate seeing you walk past me when I was admiring the panel switch

@ZiggyTheHamster @connections hah, right on ☺️

Yes, I was at the museum yesterday. 😁 I hadn't gotten to spend any time with Sarah and Claire for a while and missed them very much. 💚

@ZiggyTheHamster @connections your outfit that day was super on point, by the way 😁

@deviantollam @connections I am genuinely honored that you at all would recognize me :)

And thank you. I’m still trying to figure this whole transfem thing out and sometimes outfits don’t work and that was a dress I wasn’t sure about (and the goth accessories with the dress even less so).

But as you surely already know, it’s fucking worth it. 💜

Given my vanity phone number, I’m also excited I got to try phreaking for the first time.

@deviantollam @connections

Here’s that outfit if you weren’t at the museum yesterday

@deviantollam I wonder how much time was spent chasing that little ball bearing after retracting the screw a little too vigorously on refill. @connections
