The story is probably only apocryphal, but he was a real man: Triboulet, a court jester in medieval France

Triboulet struck the King on the buttocks in jest

The King didn't laugh and threatened him with death unless he could make the King laugh

His response, unfortunately, involved insulting the Queen

So the King sentenced him to death but said Triboulet could choose how he would die

Triboulet said "Old Age"

The King laughed

And that was that

Triboulet served two kings of France in the 16th century, but is crude jokes nearly sent him to the executioner's block more than once.
