I enjoyed this documentary on the history of IRC; especially liked the part where they talked about etiquette how you should say goodbye before disconnecting and then wait 30 seconds so everyone else has a chance to say goodbye

the only disappointing bit is that they didn't talk at all about Freenode; I figured its crash would be exactly the kind of excitement and drama that would appeal to youtubers, plus the implication that there's no one left using IRC was kind of annoying

@technomancy That Freenode implosion was such a shitshow! I left on a lengthy road trip shortly after it broke out, had to lift and shift a nontrivial setup of bots, bouncers, and web interface in a hurry before checking out of a hotel room.
@aaron maybe they left it out because "that one time a mad pretender to the Korean throne destroyed the world's largest remaining IRC network" sounds ..... too clickbait-y
@technomancy .... not wrong. Not at all.
@technomancy i had no idea that "efnet" stood for anything. that it was just a petty dig at a particular server was just so quaint and charming
@technomancy they also skipped over bots completely, which was of course personally disappointing, but i guess they were pretty niche even back then
@robey like you had anything to do with irc. Hmph.
