I agree with you. It’s a cool conecpt, but TikTok and Instagram have their algorithms. Love it or hate it, those apps are great at keeping your eyes glued to the screen. Loops/Pixelfed may be less evil, but they are considerably more boring. I can scroll through loops for a few minutes and when you come back it starts again at the beginning and you see the same videos over again. Also, the scrolling is glitchy.
It was my experience when I tried it earlier this year. Around 5 people posting a lot and the other casual users just uploading tik tok videos.

I don’t need social media that badly, I’ll survive just fine without it. Too many people perceive and live their lives through social media and doing it for the gram. Fuck that noise.
When it started, I liked it. It sucked after Meta bought it.
I was a bit heated before, but you’re right it wasn’t bad in the beginning. But for myself, I ended up using it too much, to the point where I essentially planned out my weekends so I had things to post.
I guess you could say it was some ego-driven nonsense that motivated me to always be online and always having something new and fresh to show and always one upping myself to be bigger and better and bolder photos. But all of that burned me out. And in the end it was all so superficial 90% of the time.
Truthfully, eventually at some point, it just became depressing scrolling endlessly and seeing the best photos any photographer could want. It was just too much. That’s not entirely Insta’s fault, but also on me for not setting any limits or boundaries. But since uninstalling, my mental health went up noticeably quickly and I never looked back to use it because it serves no need for me.
I liked Instagram when it was a camera alternative app only.
Pixelfed is more of the Instagram replacement.
Loops is TikTok focused.

IANAL, but I don't think there's a reasonable ground for a lawsuit (although there's nothing prevent an attempt). It's not claiming to be TikTok, that would be a clear trademark infringement. It's just saying it's similar to their service, and if you want to compare it (which is allowed), you have to refer to it somehow. Similar to when people say LibreOffice is an MS office alternative - Microsoft wouldn't have the grounds to sue there, either.

I keep checking it every once in a while, but 90% of what I scroll through are nothing but nature shots with the other 10℅ being extreme political hot takes or just (bad) memes ripped straight from tiktok.
The “Explore” tab always has the same 12 videos. Look at it again 6 months later, same videos.

SoyTDII remember when he announced that videos could be uploaded from the website next week…he said that in February. In August, he said it would be possible soon. There was an instance (loops.gay) that allowed you to do that, but it disappeared.

MicrowWell, it is developed by a sole developer who also solo-develops Pixelfed. The guy spreads himself way too thin, so development moves slow.

To mean they’ve published the source code to the public. Reading further, I see “First alpha release” a couple times, meaning the project is in its very early stages and is just now in a state where the developer can upload it to Github for access by the public.
Viewing said Github repository, I find it is licensed under the AGPL, a strongly copyleft license. This software will be free to use, distribute, examine and modify forever under those terms. Looks like the intention here is for the software to be Stallman-style “Free.”
So you have apparently pissed your panties at the mere usage of the words “open source” in which case I’m not even going to bother to try telling you to go touch grass. You’re too far gone.
