Gaming Laptops That Look Normal - Lemmy.World

Would you pick a subtle gaming laptop or a spaceship?

I despise the look of most gaming laptops.
Unless someone really needs a GPU in the laptop for video editing or something, I would rather recommend that a Steam Deck and cheap netbook are probably better for most people’s needs. 2 devices that do their jobs well and have decent battery, instead of one device that kinda does everything kinda poorly.
Some games are not optimized for steam decks, for example simulations, strategy games, everything that requires a keyboard or tries to display a lot of text on a small screen.
it’s not a “gaming laptop”, it’s a luggable with heat management issues.
I like normal understated looking laptops. I do however like RGB keyboards so I can set the color myself, typically red so it’s easy on the eyes at night.
Plus, red wunz go fasta.
Maybe the new Framework Laptop 16 with the RTX 5070?
Came here to say Framework 16. They are nice boring silver. I have one and yes it runs hot, yes it’s loud when the fans are maxed, but it’s a pretty effective gaming computer I can pack up and take in my travels.
And the gen 2 improved on a lot of stuff and proved they are willing to upkeep a modular GPU upgrade path
GPU upgrade path seems like a dream.

I thought my Asus G14 looked pretty normal.

Unfortunately it was a complete POS that never slept correctly or would randomly used the Nvidia GPU leading to like 2-3 hour battery life.

ThinkPad + Steamdeck is my new solution.

There’s no such thing, really. Gaming laptops have to deal with some pretty wild thermals so they necessitate being thicc and covered in air vents.

I’m really satisfied with my Lenovo Legion (2024 edition), and it looks reasonably normal. I’ve redacted my PS1 to give you some hardware info. And I included a partial feet Pic just for you <3

blushes thank you! It looks super sleek in white.

The nicest I’ve ever seen are Razers laptops - www.razer.com/pc/gaming-laptops.

They’re nice build/build quality and look really sleek. However, I think the software/firmware can be spotty (had some issues with sleep on them).

Most common problem is the battery going full spicy pillow, and replacements not being available

I’ve had two in the past, but recently moved away from them. I liked having a discrete gpu for ML work, the first one was a great machine, but the latest one burns through the battery in an hour or two that I decided to not get a razer this time around.

But I appreciate the heads up!

I didn’t read the title properly and clicked on the link, expecting a list of laptops that look fucking bonkers. Was disappointed…
As a spaceship owner, they suck. They are bulky and annoying.
Yeah, finding a good-fitting case or backpack is a pain for the weird form factors
