Earlier today we had a show down between Rolfie (one of our regular sulphur crested cockies) and a pair of Long-billed Corellas. But the corellas came back soon after!

Each year they arrive in spring and investigate various parts of the nearby buildings for possible nesting spots. Such is the challenge for city birds. Most will end up tearing into a palm tree or getting booted out by a Rainbow Lorikeet. It's a tough gig for a parrot in Melbourne.

A few more shots of these two larrikins. They will try to "dig out" the hole they just found, unaware at first that bricks and mortar are not corella friendly.

@ewen

I think you might be in for a surprise...

One year they took a red hot crack at the down pipe across the way, but the brick wall itself has so far remained unpalatable even to this mob.
@ewen Tough to see that Melbourne parrots have a housing crisis.
@ewen PUT UP MORE NESTING BOXES!
@PossumPartyGlider

I literally did that one year! I actually built a nesting box for them in the hope they would pop across to our side. They did not accept the invitation however. Maybe my design was too contemporary, who can say.
@ewen Or it was too shaded or too hot? maybe we all need to offer a range of nesting opportunities. I co😇 mmit to a new box every year!

@PossumPartyGlider

In the decade we've lived here, the corellas have never approached this side of the car park. Neither have the rainbows. Only the cockies have been tolerant enough of us humans.
