@itsfoss what is a good way of telling an app is safe when downloading from open source app stores?

F-droid does code reviews and makes a list of "anti-features" you may want to be aware of. That makes them probably the safest alternative app store available, safer than the Play store even. My only con with them is no app user review method, though they do link to source repos so you can check those bug reports and discussion pages.

Other Android alt-app stores tend to be wild-west like and I only explore as a last resort.

Another alternative you can use on Android is called "Obtainium." This is not an app store, but an app that manages links to app source repos like github, giving you an easy way to install and update apps from as close to source as possible without literally building it yourself. Obtainium is also available from F-droid. Obtainium does not list apps but does let you search for an app if you know what you're looking for. It can be quite handy for niche cases.

@dcatoffm @itsfoss thanks for the info on that yes if you could see others reviews of apps that would be super helpful. Is obtainium hard to use I downloaded it but I must watch a tutorial on how to correctly use it.
@itsfoss I can't get it to play anything.
