ICE Adds Random Person to Group Chat, Exposes Details of Manhunt in Real-Time

The texts were sent to a group called “Mass Text” and show ICE using DMV and license plate reader data in an attempt to find their target, copies of the messages obtained by 404 Media show.

@evacide and they leak the one time it is a convicted felon? smells like controlling the narrative playbook this time.
@evacide Clean on OPSEC clearly means something very different in Trumpistan.

@evacide

When you reader, or you, or you, get added randomly to a Signal Chat describing ICE kidnapping plans, keep your mouth shut and make arrangements with activists and publishers.

@evacide Under which state law is ICE getting access to DMV data?
@tessarakt @evacide We live in an authoritarian country now. Laws are applied selectively to the loyalists.
@evacide @tayfonay They were probably texting with the population of the State of Massachusetts with a title like “Mass Text”

@josh Great hypothesis, but I was not included. :(

@evacide @tayfonay

@evacide Can I say that the random adding people concerns me less than the fact they are using unsecured MMS to communicate sensitive PII about a US resident (they have a valid SSN)? This cannot be compliant with privacy laws and departmental policies. The being added to a random chat is just a symptom of the larger problem - government sanctioned communications would/should make this near impossible. Following the rules would make this near impossible.

PS. My issue isn't related to the US residency, moreso to preempt the bogus BS assertion that nonresidents aren't protected by such laws. And to point out they were leaking SSNs.

@danni_storm @evacide I wonder if they have a threat model at all.

@qgustavor @evacide yes.

Threat model: anyone not a white conservative man is out to get me.

Mitigation: I must protect myself by stepping on their necks

@evacide I don't if I would have believed bad user interface design would become a valiant ally in the war with fascism, but here we are.
@llewelly @evacide It doesn't take a bad user interface design if you just enter a list of phone numbers: mistyping a phone number is a fairly common mistake. Before we had phones with address books, dialing the wrong number was a fairly common mistake.

@evacide "...active search for a convicted attempted murderer.."

The last text leak scandal disappeared quickly enough and they're banking on the above phrase being the thing people remember from this one. Distract from all the talk about how they claimed they were only going after "criminals" yet so many of the folks they've rounded up clearly aren't.

@evacide or more like "clean of" OPSEC.
@evacide Now, *THAT'S* funny! See, no need to resort to cheese when the clowns are bringing the circus to you.
@evacide Hegseth must have been in the chat
@evacide This is wild. I work in a regular office and there's plenty of stuff we won't put in an email or heck write down. How hard is this?
@evacide Are they using Omegle Enterprise for comms?
@evacide
I guess the tune “ when will they ever learn” is appropriate for our timeline 😹
@evacide "you cannot hack me because my data is public anyway"
