Tested for you: a Kaweco Classic Sport – a pocket fountain pen made of plastic – does not like to get in contact with sand, which may or may not happen in a parent's pocket. The sand got in between the cap and the body of the pen and locked it up so I couldn't uncap it anymore. Trying to force it open left lots of deep scars on the body and the inside of the cap. It still works but it is far from the buttery smooth experience it used to be.
Someone please send me the brass version of the Kaweco Sport 🥺

Just for the record, someone is sending me that brass pen now 😅
I cleaned up the scratches as best as I could, using cloth and a rough scratchy plastic sponge in an attempt to smooth the surface without removing considerable amounts of material. But of course it's still very visible when uncapped. In order to hopefully prevent sand from getting into the gap again, I put 1.5 circumferences of electrical tape around the pen body. Only a millimeter or two of the tape vanish under the cap when capped, the rest of the tape stays visible. Just wanted to make the gap smaller without the tape locking up the cap. There still is a gap but hopefully that's small enough for larger debris to stay out while allowing the cap to operate with what tiny debris might still make it in.
The scratches and the tape add to the pen's character. Sure, it doesn't look as pristine as it was when it came out of the packaging but nobody else's pen has these exact marks and modifications. It's unique. It tells a story. And it is mine.
