Another night, another photo of my monitor teasing what I'm working on.
Here, have a video of it working, as a treat:

@polpo Kind of reminds me of my favorite midi track: https://www.midimusicadventures.com/queststudios/digital-soundtracks/qfg4/

Title theme of Quest for Glory IV

Take me to the downloads! AUBREY HODGES 1993 The Quest For Glory – Shadows Of Darkness soundtrack, as recorded from the original Roland SC-55 (General MIDI) score, with Roland MT-32 enhanceme…

@polpo Just as a side note, the bus used by several consoles (DreamCast, og Xbox, etc.) is also IDE (though sometimes with weird connectors and/or unusual pinouts).
Means that a PicoIDE "Totally Legit CD-ROM drive" could also lower the price of optical drive emulators which were using FPGA until now (e.g: GD-EMU).
@dryak I didn't know that the dreamcast was ide... Interesting. Xbox is dvd though, this is a CD / IDE emulator. Not sure if it's going to be fast enough to deliver dvd content.
@sweetlilmre @dryak I didn’t realize that about the Dreamcast either! This drive speed is about the equivalent of a 5X DVD drive, probably fast enough for the OG Xbox?

@polpo @sweetlilmre Yup, the DreamCast G1 connector is just an unusual IDE connector + extra pins for CDDA, etc.

As the original GD-ROM drive is master, one of the earliest mod available (G1-ATA) was an interposer that allowed to connect an IDE HDD (or ComplacFlash) as Slave on the same IDE bus.

See here for the G1-ATA:

@polpo @sweetlilmre and RetroRGB has a summary of all the creative ways this IDE connector has been abused:

There are several options at the moment to launch homebrew and backups other than with the original GD-Rom drive: The MODE The mode is designed by Terraonion and can be installed in a Dreamcast, Saturn or PlayStation 1.  More info is available in the video below.  Here's a purchase link:  h

@polpo @dryak 5x dvd might do it for the xbox. @polpo I'll definitely test this when I get a device. If you can get it up to UDMA6 though we can replace the xbox HDD at top performance 😂
@polpo always a treat to hear the mw2 soundtrack ;)
@polpo Will it be open source hardware and cheaper than the ZuluIDE ?
