Steam Banned A Horror Game Before It Could Launch, So Now It’s Free - Lemmy.World

Lemmy

Well guess better go get this game. How can I support them financially?
It says on the article and the website they accept donations :)
Yeah found it downloading game now, also made a donation.
I used my Mastercard to donate to the dev. Eat shit credit card companies.
Huh I can’t find it on Steam.
Me too fuck them. Maybe we can make this a trend start selling games direct and stop using Steam and Epic etc platforms. Do it how they did back during the old days as shareware.
So mastercard still gets what they want - to distance themselves from what they see as distasteful content - but this way they also still get the cut of your transaction anyway? That doesn’t seem like the most effective protest
Interesting point but… what else can we do? Mail the dev cash? PayPal direct from bank? CRYPTO. I completely forgot about crypto because of all the shady bullshit. But we buy crypto with… Mastercard. Shit.
Crypto might be a good thing overall if it wasn’t infested with tech bro’s and other scum
I mean a reasonable solution would be to just move to a different bank that provides Visa instead of MasterCard
Is visa not also part of the problem?
Probably, but I don’t know of any others in America and Mastercard is the one currently under fire

The flip side of this coin is, we also get what we want. Devs get paid, and we get games.

I’m not saying it’s ideal, and I understand your point…but it’s better than not paying. This is just a typical transaction with extra steps.

MasterCard would allow this!?! Wow, this reflects so badly upon them!
Good job paying Mastercard with your rebellion dollars.
Since the article doesn’t seem to actually link to the game, it’s here: https://dreadxp.com/vile-is-banned/.
Vile Is Banned

Developer Statement: VILE: Exhumed is a game about searching through an old computer, uncovering dark secrets, and experiencing the horrors […]

Dread XP
I mean, the article embeds a video plastered with "VILEISBANNED.COM" in warning tape–style text.
The dev’s name is Cara Cadaver. Can’t get any better of a name for a horror game dev.

In case anyone is wondering, you can add the .exe to steam via games -> add non steam game.

Then once added go to game properties -> compatibility-> force compatibility -> proton

Idk if you need to force it or not but that’s what i did and it’s working

How do you like the game so far?
I poked around it enough to make sure it worked but it says to play it in one sitting so I’ve got to find a chunk of spare time maybe this weekend. I think I’ll like it from what I’ve seen though. Some puzzles to solve and the premise intrigues me
Oh cool, I wasnt sure about how much space and stuff it’ll take, I’ll book mark this and check this weekend maybe. Thanks for the info
Download was 600mb so hopefully that is reasonable enough
I goofed around with it but realized I didn’t actually want to do it in one sitting. I’m going to use a notepad and make notes as if I’m actually investigating this guy’s computer.

Not sure how I feel about the dev using the internet archive to distribute the game.

By the way, who put it in the “Community software” collection? The game is not open source.

What’s wrong with using the internet archive?
It paints a target on IA as a piracy distro while it’s plainly not. IA is not in the piracy game but using it to distribute questionable content con as tarot raises flags elsewhere.
How could this be confused as piracy. It’s uploaded by the developers of the game?
I’m not saying THIS particular instance does but generally using IA for that reason has fed into its detractor’s lame arguments against the site.
Noting wrong with the IA whatsoever. But given how harshly they’ve been treated by basically every government and corporate interest groups they’ve been forced to contend with foot the last few years, and the regular DDOSes, I personally always feel guilty downloading things from them and spending more of their resources on “relatively frivolous” things.
We need another Steam Alternative & this time it needs to be FOSS
It’s called github and gitlab

Codeberg

Fuck github - since Microsoft bought it

Since we are talking about VCS, here’s Fossil
Fossil: A Coherent Software Configuration Management System

Is it similar to Her Story?
Bro that website on mobile is vile. Shit has auto play non closable ads.
