I always respected that Canada is open to almost everyone…

Except if you have a DUI

I knew a lady that was a Canadian citizen but lived and worked in Seattle. She got a DUI and they won’t let her go back into Canada until she completes the long and expensive process that they require for DUI offenders.

I dunno, DUI is serious, you could kill someone. Maybe it is a long and expensive process to make sure people will remember it and not drive while being drunk?
So, no forgiveness?

until she completes the long and expensive process that they require for DUI offenders.

Sounds like there’s a path to forgiveness, it’s just not cheap or easy. Which, why should it be? She drove under the influence and could have killed someone.

I wasn’t speaking about anyone in particular in this case.
Then in general, what should it be?

I always figured it was a good line in the sand telling some Americans, they are not welcome

drunk driving is serious and I respect that they treat it as such

Looking at their rules for it, it actually seems kinda fucked: One bad choice years ago bars you for life unless you are wealthy enough to go through their process and hire lawyers, it's a even crime to try and enter, but that is definitely not a widely known fact, so even though someone might have paid their dues and even been completely sober for years, they're still fucked unless they're well off.

I get wanting to protect people and stop dangerous driving but effectively banning someone for life if they made a mistake and happen to be poor seems a bit unfair. You can bet your ass rich people have all sorts of ways around this that completely circumvent the system anyhow on top of all that.

As usual, it's another regulation that disproportionately affects poor people who are unable to afford proper legal representation to begin with (and are more likely to be falsely convicted of a DUI in the first place).

Which rules are you referring to?
The Canadian one that states you can't come to their country with a DUI unless you go through their reportedly expensive and time consuming process?
Do you have a link?
No but it's easy enough to find. If you are doubting me and genuinely curious, go find it! In fact, if you doubt what I have to say, you should definitely look it up for yourself instead of taking my word for it.
I did look, and I couldn’t find what you were referencing.

I read it yesterday and no longer have the link handy. I'm having a hard time believing you spent much earnest effort looking for it if you couldn't find it. I searched for "Canada DUI entry law" and it comes up as the first 5 hits at least.

I'm definitely not going to waste my time continuing to debate you though so you believe whatever you like: Your ignorance is not my responsibility or burden.

Wait, so now you did find it, but refuse to share it…?

You made some pretty bold claims there, and burden of proof is on you. It would be absurd to expect it to work the other way.

At this point it’s pretty clear that you’re just here to spread misinformation.

Wait, so now you did find it, but refuse to share it…?

I think they meant that this happened yesterday. But posting a link would have been way faster than typing two messages about how they don’t want to do it, I think

Um source on the lifetime thing? My understanding is that it’s more like 7 or 10 years, but also that the border agent has some discretion. I had a DUI quite some time ago and went to Canada around the 7 year mark without any trouble, lawyers, etc.
Did you visit before 2018? It sounds like things changed then and it’s more of a lifetime thing now. See the “Deemed Rehabilitation” section here: www.canadaduientrylaw.com

Looks like it was summer 2019.
Sounds like my ex… From Seattle. Does the word “Ace” mean anything to you?
tall blonde?
Tall brunette, striking blue eyes. She did dye it blonde before I knew her.
if the saloon was a regular hangout in pioneer square, we might know that same crazy lady
She shares the last name of a star player on the Kraken and is related to him.
That’s ridiculous. You can deny someone a driving licence, but you can’t deny them entry to the country they’re a citizen of.
Probably could have left out the words “without due process” because they should not be throwing people into an El Salvadorian gulag.
I thought it was part of the joke
I thought it was part of the joke
I thought it was part of the joke
Idk it kinda feels like the implication is that if you have due process, then this would be okay. I’m firmly in the camp that nobody should be shipped to an El Salvador Gulag for any reason

nobody should be shipped to an El Salvador Gulag for any reason

With this I agree.

I don’t see it implied to be ok, this contradiction of something that is not normal being part of an ‘advertisement’ was what I found funny

ai slop
I can’t even figure out what I’ve noticed about these things, and it pisses me off that it rings a false positive whenever I read newspaper comics
Line weight. The round eyes. The color. The exact same smile. Same angles to the viewer. 45 or direct… There are so many telltale signs.
When everyone starts using the same style, it’s either everyone hiring the same artist (unlikely) or they used AI.
I see now. I was still on the fence about it, thinking it could also be someone’s drawing trying to emulate those travel agencies ass style, but the 45° or direct angle at the camera is so true
There is a mathematic perfection that our brains easily recognize even if we can’t articulate it. The human brain is unmatched at the task of visual pattern recognition.

Honestly the silver lining with all this is how innately obvious it is what it is currently.

Literally just reeks of the same level of effort as someone making a meme out of clipart or one of those boomers that uses that fancy Facebook status feature.

If you need to generate a hero image to make your witty tweet good enough to share, maybe go back to the drawing board

I’m old. Help me not fall victim to AI slop again. How could you tell it was AI?
it’s the exact same style used in almost all ai slop comics lately. you can tell by face alone; it’s almost identical in all of them, even with different features (like facial hair).

So these are 2 images I asked AI for, which are admittedly terrible. But beyond that, I’m unsure of the distinguishing features that pegs it as AI. Any guidance (other than never make these images again - for obvious reasons)?

If you look at the details, there are signs, like structures or geometry that don’t make sense or aren’t aligned properly. Things an artist with intent would have no reason to draw that way.

no, I don’t know what you used but this is not what I’m talking about. you can find inconsistencies, colors that don’t make sense, a whole set of issues but that’s AI in general.

what I’m talking about a very specific style that vaguely apes the ligne claire style of comics, adding an old paper filter and completely lacking soul. they can have zero “errors” and still be recognizable because they are so exact and eerily similar in their style. there’s a difference between a person drawing in a particular style and a machine emulating it.

You can see these comics on Lemmy from time to time, although it might be getting less common since it gets negative comments every time. I’m pretty sure they come from one particular comic generator. or possibly multiple that use the same underlying model.

They have the same soulless faces, usually very limited and recognizable facial expressions. i recently saw one with dinosaurs and even they had the exact facial expressions that I’ve seen in other AI slop comics. they also have the same faux lettering font for text.

I think, ChatGPT usually produces those. Very recognisable, and remind me of one comic artist that also makes characters with eerie smiles, simplified style, but also very dark humour and traumas. Can’t remember their name, though.
chatgpt makes sense considering how prevalent it is
There isn’t a real way to tell anymore other then using ai detector (there are a few free websites). What people are referring to is the specific style chatgpt uses by default when making comics. They are currently the best for generating comics with text, but they overlay their style so the hate isn’t directed towards them. We are very close to having open source tools that can generate full comic pages with text in whatever style asked of it.
In the First image, there’s a yellow tint that chatgpt absolutely loves to always apply to everything. White is never white
It seems to spit this out whenever you ask for comic style. I couldn’t tell you exactly what it is.
The colors in a lot of AI images are very yellow

In this case:

  • this comic artstyle is very characteristic of AI, down to the line weight, facial expression (these soulless eyes and smile), and how the character is positioned;
  • the bus has no door;
  • the picture has a yellow-ish tint, which has been plaguing certain AI image generators ever since the AI Ghibli trend. They likely overtrained their slop machines on Studio Ghibli works and various other “cozy” artstyles/pictures.
Unlike humans an AI probably wouldn’t make a mistake like “El Salvadorian”
ChatGPT-generated images are getting yellower by the day LOL
What’s crazy is I instantly clocked it as AI slop just from the thumbnail, and I’m not even wearing my glasses.
It just all has a kind of bland sameyness to it all that once you see it you can spot it immediately in subsequent images.
My conspiracy theory is that OpenAI makes their generated images easy to recognize so that they can filter them out for learning when scraping pages.
nah, the poster is in Mexico, that’s just the Mexico filter
In a different AI comic conversation someone used the term “slop sepia” and I hope it catches on.
Can someone please get that slop outta my face?
If you insist on posting Ai slop outside of the dedicated Ai communities please at least tag it so people can filter Ai slop out.
How do you know they knew it was AI?
