Anyone have recommendations for a place to host a personal domain's email accounts? Existing provider is getting stale and stupid and runs way too much reprehensibly terrible old Unix software with some of the shittiest fucking user interfaces I have ever seen. (Wife's email is currently unavailable because of a "server error", the message with the details is not copy-pastable and is also ephemeral so better screen-shot-it-quickly. Fuck the fucking fuck who ever thought this was good UX.)
@dr2chase I have my domain and mail hosted at DreamHost and so far I haven't had to notice their existence, at least as far as email goes. So I guess that's a recommendation in their favor.
@wordshaper @dr2chase Dreamhost's spam filtering is pretty wretched, though, I've been considering moving to fastmail. (I've been on dreamhost for like... 20 years? It's cheap and fine, mostly, but the spam filtering is a real problem.)
@lemay @dr2chase I admit I haven't had an issue with spam of any significance. Dunno whether something extra's going on for me (I do have a VPS with DreamHost) or if I have a higher tolerance for spam.
@dr2chase I've used both Fastmail and LuxSci for years, and both are quite good. Fastmail has a much better web UI if you use that for mail, and it is probably better for families where you are supporting e.g. parents or kids (you can assume their account easily). LuxSci lets you share space among all users (so space is effectively cheaper) and has useful API if you are automating setups.
@dr2chase i have been using https://migadu.com. They have imap and a webmail, the micro plan is 20 USD/year for a low volume domain. (domainS, it allows “almost unlimited” domains with the cheapest plans. Why not, the domain count doesn’t affect hosting costs at all. They are logical like that)
