I found an interesting thesis from 2005: https://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/id/eprint/1197/, and in Chapter 5: "Getting the Message: Public Electronic Mail Networks," it describes the many incompatible e-mail networks around the world and UK especially. It's a very interesting read and it's well written! It also contained this table of incompatible addressing formats.
