Leisure Suit Larry solved the age verification problem years ago, the UK should just use that.
@grumpygamer In that if you remember and played Leisure Suit Larry, you are at least an adult?
@frang @grumpygamer Yes! A popup containing the phrase "Ken Sent Me" and a name input field that will only grant access for "Larry Laffer" seems like it could work both keeping anonymity _and_ verifying the age and interests of the visitor.
@Mabande @frang @grumpygamer I will forever type my phone number as 555-6969

@grumpygamer

“Does IDE refer to hardware or software?”

(Well I guess they just need to know if you’re over 18, not if you’re ancient…)

@rk @grumpygamer yes, it does; IDE drives are hardware and an IDE is a type of software application. But I guess that was the point.

@grumpygamer Germany in the 90s: We were 13 years old. Our English could be called rudimentary at best. Nevertheless we bruteforced our way through this quiz in the hope of finding pixelated breasts.

Intrinsic motivation solves every problem.

@n_to @grumpygamer can confirm the same in 90s Argentina
@sherwoodinc @n_to @grumpygamer Somebody figured out the Alt+X bypass here.
@jernej__s @sherwoodinc @n_to @grumpygamer did not even know Alt-x was *not* the normal way to get in ... Was there a password involved? Dutch 90s Btw
@elaan @sherwoodinc @n_to @grumpygamer You had to answer the quiz questions correctly (it let you choose a wrong answer once).

@n_to

@grumpygamer

.. and I guess you instead found dark bars, quickly changing height and reading the word "censored", when it came to visuals NSFW 🤣

@grumpygamer Ctrl-Alt-X
@root42 @grumpygamer What is this?
@jellycrystals @root42 @grumpygamer IIRC it brought up a panic spreadsheet screen to help you look like you were doing work
@truxnell @jellycrystals @grumpygamer almost. In some versions of the game it would let you skip the age verification…
@root42 @jellycrystals @grumpygamer this knowledge would have saved young me a lot of headaches
@grumpygamer Oh, wonderful memories on sunny summer holidays sitting in the cold garage, where we placed my father's old Atari ST and played games.
@grumpygamer Great, now that theme song is stuck in my head.
Leisure Suit Larry: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards is coming to the C64!

Leisure Suit Larry: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards is coming to the C64!

@grumpygamer Still remembering where the Great Fire of London started, etc.
@grumpygamer I grew up in the Soviet Union, when I played LSL as a kid I had no clue what those questions were about lol. Still managed to get past them.
@grumpygamer 💯% THIS!! ☝️🤓
And if u get most of the Q's wrong, the adult site should still let you in, BUT automatically change to keep everyone's clothes on, etc 😂

@grumpygamer I remember getting the first LSL. We were way too young to understand the questions, so we would run upstairs and ask our dad for the answers to get through the initial questions. :)

He didn't care.

I also thought it was amusing if you said your age was 99, it would recommend you stop playing because it wasn't good for your heart.

@dmoonfire @grumpygamer haha I did too! Dad had no idea! Learned a bit of English and how to play black jack!

@grumpygamer Ctrl-Alt-X is your friend.

(Exact input may vary depending on version)

Hey don't go telling everyone!
@grumpygamer Even better we could introduce verification tests for becoming a parent and solve the problem the other way

@grumpygamer maybe the US could use it too, and when it notices your health could be in jeopardy you'll get healthcare!

nahhhhhhh

@grumpygamer

I still remember being in high school and my idiot friends calling me up and asking me the trivia questions to get into the game. I was the same age as them, but they figured I would know ... and they were right.

@grumpygamer those qs took 7 8 year olds 3 days to solve! Was the best teamwork we’d done at that age and I welcome this opportunity for everyone.

@grumpygamer
wenn you turn 18, you get an official Dial-an-Adult code wheel...

...and each site can ask you anonymously for an adult code

✅ problem solved ✅

@grumpygamer the Life in the UK test has many questions that feel a lot like that, they just need to repurpose them!
