Okay, here's my "Has this ever happened to you..."

I got a letter from my bank saying they needed me to fill out a W-9 and send it back to them to avoid my income from going into Backup Withholding. Keep in mind I'm a Housewife, and have no income, and just file jointly with my hubs.

So, first I call my bank's 1-800 number, and they say they don't know what's going on and send me to Accounting, Accounting says they don't know what's going on, but tells me to call the local branch directly. The local branch says I definitely need to fill it out and send it back to avoid Backup Withholding, but they also don't know why, and I need to call the IRS. I call the IRS, and they say they also don't really know why I'm being ask to do, but I definitely need to do it.

So, I turn to internet sleuthing, and either:

They've decided I owe back taxes, and the only thing I can think was a small life insurance payout that I got when my Mom passed, but I was told it wasn't taxable income, or possibly the interest on the savings account the money is in, but hubs is pretty sure he put that in our income tax filing.

They think I have some unreported income. (I don't)

Something about my information was inaccurate when income tax was filed, ot some other government documents, like even a typo or something.

Or a mysterious 4th thing, where it seems to suggest sometimes they send these things out and no one knows why exactly, JUST FILL OUT THE PAPER, DO IT NOW!

I'm also wondering if someone else used my SS# for nefarious purposes.
@RickiTarr sometimes undocumented people can't get a job without a ssn so they use someone else's on the application and tax forms. The employer pays the withholding tax amount in their (assumed) name and your ssn
