when will I learn that "no seats could be reserved on this CrossCountry train" means "don't take it unless you want to stand the whole way" #GreatJourney
"oh this one has 9 coaches! it'll be fine!" reader, the demand for a CrossCountry service always expands to fill the available space (between passengers)
oh. turns out you can't use the rear 4 coaches; they're just being delivered to Birmingham New St, but heaven forbid we let the smelly passengers in there. so this is a 5 coach service, actually
pro XC tip: stand in the passenger compartment between the seats, not in the vestibule. there's no ventilation in the vestibule (>3000 ppm CO2) and it's really hot in there, but they have aircon for the passenger bit
@eta this goes for many trains... almost all...
@maartje I guess an additional benefit is you won't be part of the crumple zone in the event of a crash, either
@eta true.. though the actual reason is to not overload the AC on long station stops. That's why regional trains with no interior doors have auto closing doors
@eta insufficient guards available?
@erincandescent well, it wasn't scheduled to have more than 1 in the first place! they just put the coaches there to taunt you
@eta when lner is declassified i have learned to walk back to the office and move my booking
