Ferns have been on Earth since before the dinosaurs, with the earliest dated back to the Devonian and Triassic eras.
They spread via spores, which can be seen here on the back of the beautiful, delicate leaves.
I love ferns for their visual symmetry and repetition, they're so elegant yet so persistent, and the way they unfurl is fascinating.

@stevenlawson So, long story slightly less long: I was (pre-wheelchair), outdoorsy in the extreme. Upstate NY, where I'm from, around the lake is rife with ferns, between the damp and the shade from all the trees. The smell of fern is one of my top favorite comfort aromas. If you wafted some dirt and water, a rock, and a fern frond under my nose I'd probably transform into my next evolution or something.
@VaylLarkinPoet That's awesome to hear! I was stood waist-high in ferns yesterday in the local woodland I help to maintain, and I felt transported back to another time millennia ago. They have a magical hold over me.
