Ive always differentiated lemmy/reddit from social media for 2 main reasons. First because it isnt (or wasnt) full of āinfluencersā trying to push shit on you. Second and probably more so, becausee its anonymous. I dont know anyone one here personally and no one knows me. These platforms are more like collections of the internet with a comment section, imo. Not much different than things like The Chive or even a news site, but instead of news, its memes and sometimes news
The structured user information is what I think killed the āfreeā vibe of the early internet: you naturally see a lot of information even before you contact anyone. That removes some intimacy of exchanging information about who you are, in a way you want.
Around 2000, I was playivg pool with random people on Yahoo Games, and trying to learn English talking to them. Iāve met a girl of my age from Jakarta, I talked to oome boomer Arizona cowboy who was releived to know āweāre not fucking commies anymoreā (I`m Russian). These were interesting conversations where we discovered each other. Now I wouldnāt talk to the guy like that, because āI see we probably donāt have much in common, and he wrote this and that to other peopleā

The best distiction iāve heard is that social media follows people (twitter, youtube, mastodon, etcā¦ whereas lemmy, reddit, etcā¦ follow topics. Theyāre more like news feeds with a comment section.

Thatās not the point of contention. Itās about whether or not forums/message boards (regardless of political ideology) can correctly be categorized as āsocial mediaā.
They wrongly contend that not only is that possible but in fact inarguably correct.
I, on the other hand, correctly pointed out the ridiculousness of such a claim.
This in turn made them jump to the separate incorrect conclusion that my slightly brusque wordplay was proof positive that I was overcome with apoplectic fits of all-consuming rage and that fondling lawn trimmings would be an effective remedy.
