On July 3rd, astronaut Nichole Ayers photographed a rare Gigantic jet from the ISS. These upward directed electrical discharges extend 90-100 km high into the atmosphere.

I processed this image from the RAW file, adjusting the white balance, contrast and noise reduction.

The jet originated from a large thunderstorm over Northern Mexico, with city lights from South Texas and the airglow layer visible along Earth’s limb.

The RAW was provided to me by Frankie Lucena, his analysis of the event, correlating it to measurements from the Geostationary Lightning mapper and ELF-VLF radio signals can be found here: https://spaceweathergallery2.com/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=224355

@stim3on

Absolutely beautiful. Can't help seeing it as a "space tree of light".

@stim3on This looks awesome
@stim3on that’s beautiful -- thank you!
@stim3on
this looks a lot like the Third Impact from #evangelion get ready yall 😩
@stim3on they took a picture of a lightning's butt
@stim3on most epic sprite pic ever? 📷 👀 🤩
@Mazzo Certainly the best one taken from space!
@stim3on super cool! Curious how does it work though. What's it discharging to? 🤔
@stim3on oh the ionosphere I guess?
@zeenix Yeah, the mesosphere/ionosphere. This can happen when a large lighting bolt discharges into the ground, rapidly changing the polarity of the cloud. This creates a potential to the ionosphere that will discharge as a red sprite or sometimes a gigantic jet like this. Though these phenomena are not fully understood yet.

@stim3on fake news! this pic is me and my homie having a baybalde battle last Tuesday fotographed from space.
@Eisregen hope no one got hurt then, this looked quite energetic :O
@stim3on normal Tuesday. I had a few scratches but thats expected.
Bayblade is a sport that requires professionalism and a strong spirit.
I def would recommend training with dreidels and going to baybladebootcamp before going into a full bayblade fight. Savety should always be the no 1 priority.
@stim3on WOW. That is a stunning photograph.
@stim3on New wallpaper. Thank you!
@stim3on
Did they remove the UIPs?
