My IT career spans back to the days we FTP'd straight to production. Pretty sure my first gray hair sprouted right then. And that, my friends, is how you know you're seasoned 🤣
@nixCraft our first doc site was a gopher page.
@nixCraft If you haven’t read ed commands out over a phone to someone at a remote site to edit a production config, were you really in IT “back in the day” ?
@david @nixCraft «NO, do not type ‘space’ just hit the space bar!»
@nixCraft Wait, so you invented DevOps? 😜
@internic
Using ftp it's more Dev-Oops 😜
@nixCraft
@internic @nixCraft Devops was unintentional, we just had one geek do both things, and just hired more of those people instead of people who knew one or the other to concentrate on one aspect.

@nixCraft
Some days, I still ftp to prod and backfill to version control.

"Some" might undersell this.

@xinit @nixCraft speaking of version control, I remember migrating from CVS to SVN. I had an SVN server running until surprisingly recently.
@camerageek @xinit @nixCraft I did that too. And then years later another project that used CVS we migrated to git. Then instead of using CVS for future projects I use git even though I prefer some things about CVS over git.
@camerageek @xinit @nixCraft .. actually perhaps that’s not quite right: I ended up using svn for a new project but then the CVS one was migrated to git. The svn one was either migrated (as in merged into) or changed (i.e. made a new repo) to git.
@nixCraft we always moved existing files to _backup first though.
@nixCraft password in plain text in some file (I don't remember which).
@nixCraft I recall those days well, and why Friday afternoon deployments became anathema :D

@nixCraft

encryption? where we're going we don't need no encryption.

@nixCraft why did you need to FTP straight to production? Why not just compile the code there?
@nixCraft You still have hair, well that ain't too bad.
@nixCraft My first linux install was to build an ftp server, so this checks out.

@nixCraft What's really strange is that lately I've begun to miss that era.

I think that's why I keep a Neocities site, where I have to edit the HTML/CSS/whatever by hand. No dev environment, just editing live.

@nixCraft in the 2017 (I think it was 2017) action comedy film The Hitman’s Bodyguard (hitman played by Samuel L Jackson and bodyguard played by Ryan Reynolds) the hitman (Darius Kincaid) refers to an FTP site. Because he wasn’t going to trust Interpol with the evidence. I guess most people who watch it don’t get it and the irony makes it even better since FTP is hardly secure.
@nixCraft No FTP for me! I used to send the CD via FedEx on Friday afternoon and install it Monday morning straight to production. Those were the days… 🤣
