Oh that's a good point I hadn't thought about that! No wonder it seems to adapt so readily.

The tortoise just wants to be friends and to be included in whatever's going on around it. They are very curious and social critters.

If you haven't already, go find the YouTube channel; there are a bunch of these videos. My favorites are the ones where Turtle rolls up to Cat, & then sits & stares up at Cat's face like, "Pleeeeese be my friend!"

I think most people would be shocked at how fast tortoises can run. When they want to, of course!
@Natasha_Jay I found this video too short, so I went and found this:
Those were cute as anything. Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if the turtle had to learn how to use the skateboard, or if riding the skateboard felt like swimming to the turtle.
@SeldenOtter I see what you did there. lol
And, just because it is a perfect accompaniment, here is Sandy Boynton's "Speed Turtle" sung by the late Brian Wilson.
Man, assistive technology can really enhance agency in anyone.
@ApostateEnglishman The cat could probably just go somewhere where the tortoise cannot go...
@ApostateEnglishman @Natasha_Jay
And cats are justn โขnotโข programmed to be pursued by something smaller than they are. You see this same effect with ferrets.
@cavyherd @Natasha_Jay Right! The cat could just jump onto something and sit there smugly, but it's instincts tell it to attack because the thing is half its size. But the tortoise has had millions of years of evolution to adapt to exactly such attacks, so there's nothing the cat can do.
It's like human vs. tank. ๐
@ApostateEnglishman @Natasha_Jay
My favorite: watching the cat spot the ferret: "Oo! Small prey mammal!" & start stalking. Then the ferret catches sight of the cat & starts stalking โขbackโข. Stg, the cat's brain visibly shorts out. It starts backing up. You can see the thought balloon form: "Ohโoh no. Oh waitโthis isn't how this is supposed to goโ!"
The ferret then instinctively goes for the cat's belly. Cat levitates onto nearest elevated surface, & spends the rest of the evening sulking.
@cavyherd @Natasha_Jay Oh many a cat, or a rat, or a rabbit, has been outwitted by a ferret. Those things can take on anything. Once they get a hold they're not letting go until the prey has bled out. They're relentless.
Our family has kept ferrets too.

Ah. Then You Know

An intimidation index that would embarrass a bear.
I gotta get my tort a skateboard!
