The family of a green card holder “was told he died in ICE custody. Then they learned he’s alive — in a hospital in Guatemala, they say.”

When this is all over—and I have to believe it will be over one day—there need to be trials.

“The last time anyone in the family saw Leon was June 20, when he went with his wife to a Philadelphia immigration office to have his lost green card replaced.

There, the family says, he was handcuffed by two officers, who led him away without explanation. His wife, who speaks little English, was left behind and kept in the building for 10 hours until she was released to her granddaughter, the family says.”

“Repeated inquiries to immigration officials, prisons, hospitals and even a morgue yielded no information. Leon’s name was not in ICE’s online database of detainees.

Finally, on Friday, a relative from Leon’s native Chile was told he had been taken first to a detention center in Minnesota and then to Guatemala.” https://www.mcall.com/2025/07/18/luis-leon-allentown-grandfather-ice-guatemala/

@tusk81 That's a new low. That poor family.

@tusk81 Hmm, but SCOTUS judged that the president has more or less absolute immunity while in office. And the president can pardon all the others.

So, either you need to also aim to have a revoked SCOTUS decision and/or get rid off of that pardon system.

Otherwise I don't know how you want to have trials about all those now without overcoming the current system completely?

@ij @tusk81 Slim consolation, but the pardon power is only regarding federal offenses. So the best way to make it stick is with state charges.
@ij @tusk81 I think what the OP means is, "Things will have to change."
@fgbjr @tusk81 Sure. I just wanted to point out that change is not easy when the government is in full fascist swing.
@tusk81 The US “justice” system would favor these rich and powerful people and at best they’d get a slap on the wrist. They’ll need to be done by international courts and live streamed with translations for the world to see.

@tusk81 We will absolutely need Nuremberg style trials here.

With the same level of penalties and consequences.

MAGAts are the new nazis, and if we let them they WILL go to same lengths.

Karl Popper, all the way.

@tusk81 For which you need that rule of law. And as the USA doesn't take part in any international courts you can forget that.
@TimWardCam @tusk81 The Nazis weren't part of any international courts, yet the Nuremberg trials happened anyway.
@tusk81 there need to be *convictions*

@tusk81
You can take notes from the nuremberg trials after ww2. But make sure to denazify better than last time.

The big problem is that we dont have the soviet union to annihilate them this time.

@tusk81
Why should there be, SCOTUS said, it's all fine, right?

Sorry experience shows that perpetrators in totalitarian systems seldom get legally prosecuted.

In the post communism era only the Romanian dictator was executed during the turmoil. Even despite WWII less than 1000 Nazi mass murderers were executed.

So what exactly do you want prosecuted? (80-90% of what Trump does is basically applying laws that already exist in extra cruel ways.)

@tusk81
Congressman Swalwell said the same thing.

@tusk81

There need to be trials in the same manner as Mussolini was tried, especially as several of those needing to be dealt with are judges themselves.

@tusk81 expecting the law to provide justice after everything we have seen is kind of improbable.
@tusk81 we need a fucking revolution.
@tusk81 What they did to Leon and his family, as described in that article, is completely unacceptable. There's one thing about the article that is a bit odd, however: it seems to suggest that an 80+ year old person has a green card, and green cards are typically issued to people with badly needed skills at the request of an employer. But at an age of over 80, someone would most likely be retired. Was there a mistake regarding the type of immigration document?
@tusk81
Ironically this website geoblocks itself in EU
@tusk81 Trials, NOT a "Reconciliation" council. None of the "Well, let's all try to forget about what happened and start anew" BS. People will need to be brought to justice, and justice must be seen to be done. Anything else would be a whitewash
