@HarriettMB To clarify from my understanding of what is being described here, Randahl mentioned you in his Mastodon post. BridgyFed, the fediverse/Bluesky bridge, copied that post to Bluesky. Since your own account is not opted-in to bridging, the mention in the post was interpreted by Bluesky as a web link, for which it generated a preview card. The preview card is based on public information provided by Mastodon. There is clearly a clash of expectations here but no malice.

If this was as simple as solely being caused by an @ mention, then what's the alternative? Don't talk to the person you're talking to when you're talking to them? But just a name may be enough to search anyway.

It's important to remember that your Fedi profile is publicly viewable. No account needed. The Fediverse isn't really optimized for locking things down. If there is a risk of doxxing, you definitely shouldn't use a real image of yourself and ideally should be careful what you say. Treat the Fedi as you would the open Internet.

@SnowyCA @Gargron @HarriettMB @Em0nM4stodon I'm not trying to be dismissive. The fact is, if you post an image you don't want seen publicly, it will be public. Nothing can change that. I'm not blaming bad actions on such a thing. Doxxers can take what they do and stick it to themselves. It's not the victim's fault what hostile actors do, but that doesn't mean victims shouldn't protect themselves either.

I think also there may have been some misunderstanding here. The assumption presumably was that by putting it on a Fediverse profile, only Fediverse users would see it. However, as it's a publicly viewable profile, it's viewable to all crawlers -- including the automatic crawlers. Thus if you don't want it shown by such crawlers the only fix is for it not to be visible to them.

@SnowyCA If, according to you, behaving responsibly is blocking the bridge, I can follow the reasoning. But one of the biggest unreflected harassers in this story has just recently encouraged people to follow them through the bridge, because they “post more on bluesky now”, and it seems like you’re defending them.

If your mastodon profile is public that means it can be viewed by anyone with an internet connection and a web browser. Any person could share your profile link to any website, social network or whatever and see all of your posts. It'ss not a mastodon, fediverse or bluesky problem. That's how it works.

The thing is, If someone is going to bridge their account they need take time to check their posts are accurate. This mess could have been avoided if he had taken a moment to check his post over on Bsky, not assume tech is perfect..
