The village apple tree has a heavy load this year.

This tree stands in the grounds of the village hall. It has been there for as long as I can remember. We climbed the tree as kids and stole the apples from it. Kids still do that, although these days they use the apples as weapons. My son once had concussion from an apple being launched at his head, an apple from this very tree. It is right next to the school, so prime picking spot for kids.
Nobody cares for the tree and as far as I know, the apples are left for the birds.

It is a beautiful tree, the rush of memories that came back to me this morning, as I stood looking at the bounty of apples growing, I'm filled with a strange mixture of both joy and sadness.

@JustFi give us a clue - where is this?

@eddlestonian No chance, someone might steal the apples 😂

(Its a tiny village in north east Fife)

@JustFi we have a small orchard in our village (Eddleston near Peebles). At harvets time we borrow a crusher to make apple juice and the vil
lagers take it home to make cider etc.
@eddlestonian A local farmer here was donating fruit trees to the small villages to set up their own orchard, but ofc, the village I'm in refused because nobody wanted the trees near them, they would get damaged, it would look untidy etc etc. Unfortunately the village is ruled by people who don't like change and can't see why we need something new.
@JustFi People can be stupid. I don't lnow who gifted the orchard to the village but it was probably gifted to the village at least 100 years ago.
@eddlestonian People definitely can be around here, its very much a village that doesn't like change and likes everything to be just "right" and right is what a few of the large families want, to hell with everyone else. As you may have guessed, I spend half my time upsetting the locals by refusing to fit into their narrow little world.
@JustFi Join the Community Council!
@eddlestonian the folks on the community Council don't like me since I argued with them over the use of a community mental health grant, and since I'm not liked locally, I don't have the backing of other people.
@JustFi Time to move?
@eddlestonian Thought about it often, but it all comes down to money....or lack of!
@JustFi We are but stewards of these ancient beauties.
@MrInappropriate I hope this tree lasts for a long time yet!
@JustFi I enjoy trees. The planting of a seedling, knowing you’ll never see it fully grown, but others will, is a pleasure.
@JustFi I take it you live somewhere that doesn't have cockatoos
@evcricket I'm in Scotland
@evcricket @JustFi Are cockatoos notorious apple thieves?
@Fishercat @JustFi They're notorious anything growing on trees thieves. At our place they pull the oranges off the tree and eat the seeds out of them
