The UK Environment Agency has some tips for the public to help conserve water, including

> Deleting old emails to reduce pressure on data centre servers

I kid you not.

England faces 5 billion litre public water shortage by 2055 without urgent action

England faces 5 billion litre a day shortfall for public water supplies by 2055 – and a further 1 billion litre a day deficit for wider economy.

@neil Good idea. I have many litres of emails, going back years.
@neil brought to you by the same political class that suggested rolling out guard dogs to bark and deter drones over Heathrow…
@ret @neil yeah, like that would ever work anyway. What kind of society allows canine trebuchets?
@neil @ret drone bees maybe
@neil They will be suggesting burning plastic to save on recycling next.
@Extelec
Do not ask what happens to contents of the soft plastics "recycling" cage at your local supermarket.
@neil

@neil

the truly sad thing here is that i had no doubts about this being from the UK govt...

@neil I hope this email finds you conserving water by deleting it
@neil avoiding AI tools would have a significantly higher impact lol
@neil reminds me of a quora question something along the lines of "is my computer heavier if i store more data on it" and the answer is technically yes, but in reality you are never going to notice it lol

@kate @neil I'm reminded of this. Probably my favourite episode.

@artnacrea @neil gosh i hate those absolutely not fake sitcom laughters
@kate @neil I'll just, er, leave this here, which came across my feed a couple of days ago: https://vt.social/@lina/114816623044909375

@neil did they get this list mixed up with their “how to get rid of the evidence” list?

@neil tis fine, just ask AI to do it.

Lots of savings of water then.

@neil

It's hard work being this environmentally conscious but it's nice to get some recognition from the Government finally.

@neil Ah, they're proposing relying on individual action to solve systemic problems, something that never in the history of humanity has failed spectacularly to work.
@wordshaper @neil so far it has worked for over 3 decades to keep the people responsible out of the line of fire and in the line of profits.
@neil the internet is a series of water pipes
@0xabad1dea ... a water treatment plant with all of the sewage and none of the treatment ... @neil
@Tom_ofB that's what avoiding therapy gets ye @0xabad1dea @neil
@MxVerda ouch, that hit closer to home than you might have intended @0xabad1dea @neil
@Tom_ofB  sorry!
Deciding between Level 4 Counselling courses atm, and my go-to response for 90% of problems in any narrative is "If this character could access therapy -- !" @0xabad1dea @neil
@MxVerda I've yet to meet a person this side of, say, 25 years of age who couldn't use at least a bit of therapy.
Anyway I just like to play with words, especially in languages that I'm not a native speaker of - like English. Which is not to say that I'm NOT a disgruntled 40+ yo. ;D
@0xabad1dea @neil
@neil We get the same kind of stuff in France, and even are told to teach it to students.
@neil the British government is wrong about a great deal of things, trans people, people risking their lives to get to this country, etc. So this shouldn't surprise me, and yet
@mindpersephone @neil you can just make a list of things the government is wrong about and daily mail obsessions and you will find the lists to be extremely similar.
@neil they should recommend using smaller fonts to save on disk space as well 🙄
@TheMNWolf yes. And, cut down on the punctuation. No more Oxford Commas. Imagine, the space saved! @neil
@neil is it just me or is the British government's communication with their citizens quite infantile?
@me @neil they view us all as spoiled children, which is a grand case of Projection

@me @neil Their communication is often quite infantile.

And often ignores actual solutions, like fixing the water network's myriad leak issues.

@neil recommended action: sell reshark sunny to buy water
@neil bonus points: use AI to go through those emails and decide which ones to keep 🙄

@neil Are we sure this recommendation wasn't just made up by a government official looking for an excuse to delete emails with evidence of corruption?

"I deleted them for mother nature! Totally selflessly. I'm not hiding anything."

@neil

I guess AI is supposed to consume a load of water, so if we just delete the internet problem solved.

@smiggs @neil but I don't waaaaanna print out all the porn
@MxVerda @neil don't worry we'll put some in a hedgerow for you.
@smiggs I feel like a discerning pervy outdoor cat now @neil

@neil

Water-scarce communities and regions
are putting pressure on data centre
operators to reduce their water usage
significantly and to implement solutions
that ensure a more efficient use of
water for cooling purposes.

@neil I use ad blockers and reader mode to save the planet, honest.
@neil @bert_hubert maybe they think those mails are in contact with water because the providers need to scan them for hidden messages ... 🫣
@neil they're actually fucking incompetent if they think the shitty 2mb of emails that the average person stores causes any kind of measurable water usage from datacenters

this is some clown shit, I'd actually bet money that the act of deleting these mailboxes uses more energy than doing absolutely nothing... doing nothing won't use more CPU cycles lol
@neil Interestingly, (and in no way related...) the EA also has an AI powered chat bot that allows you to talk to flood defense: https://www.hlp.city/en-gb/case-studies/flood-resilience-and-awareness
Hello Lamp Post — Flood Resilience and Awareness

“Hello EA” is an exciting digital tool that marks the Environment Agency’s first use of AI for public engagement.

@mike @neil oh my fucking god, the irony is so painful
@neil
But also don't decrease demand for data centre storage because Kapitalism.
@neil Maybe they should have a word with Ofcom to ask them to stop using slop images all over their Web site?
@neil next they will try to prompt their way to a solution. Thankfully this AI thing doesn't require cooling right?
@neil I notice "stop using LLMs" isn't on that list when that would make an enormous difference.
@neil but but… AI….
@neil all my long abandoned gmail accounts must be absolutely THIRSTY right now.
@neil
I don't even know where to start ... 🤪 😬

@neil

We are going to 'tech' our way to oblivion.

@neil Is it an advance on 'share a bath' ? Asking for a friend.
@neil Water companies are spilling millions of litres through leaky pipes, selling off reservoirs, putting shit in our seas and rivers...... And I have to let my garden die to save water... fuck them.
@neil Thames water currently loses over half billion litres of drinking water every single day because they prioritised shareholder value over infrastructure (and UK gov let it happen). They can go fsck themselves.

@Nux @neil

It sounds like you run your water the way America runs its health care.

No necessity of life should be for profit. No parasite should be allowed to kill, or threaten to kill, people in order to extort money out of them

I've never understood why this isn't universally accepted.

@Nux @neil Today I discovered that the water industry is even more full of sharks than I expected. Thames Water generally doesn’t deal with commercial customers directly, but rather they make you go to a middle man and buy water from them. Adding another layer of cost and opportunity to seek rents, as well as someone else to deny responsibility when it all goes wrong.

@Nux @neil
