⚠️ Important PSA about #Pocket ‼️

If you used Pocket to save interesting articles you found online, you may be aware that #Mozilla decided to shut down the app and discontinue support.

I vaguely remembered that date was July and had a mini-heart attack when I saw it was actually July 8.

Good news though: if you, like me, have hundreds of articles saved to Pocket, you have until October 8 to request an export of your data (I just did): https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/future-of-pocket

Next up: moving to @wallabag 🤗

More information about the end of support for Pocket.

@_elena @wallabag and its part of your #yunohost so just another click away ;)

@stereo yes I saw that! Thanks Ralf.

I was up at 5:50am checking the YunoHost catalog... that's why Wallabag / Pocket were on my mind this morning 😅

@wallabag

@_elena @wallabag and not even another domain needed, just somewhere behind /wallabag
@stereo yeah I've been hosting a bunch of things on a subdomain... very cool. I'll do it once I get my archive :)
@_elena I think I missed a message or two there, but PSA the YunoHost version of Wallabag doesn't yet support the new Pocket import 🙁️

What I did for now is use this tool to convert the Pocket exports into Instapaper export format, and do an "import from Instapaper" in Wallabag (roundabout but works 😅️)

https://benjaminoakes.github.io/pocket-to-wallabag/

Unfortunately it seems to have a limit on the number of articles it processes, so I opened up my pocket.zip, split the CSV files inside into smaller CSV files, re-zipped them with just one file per .zip, and converted that 😛️

Also, it didn't import the created_at date which is important for me, so I'm thinking of writing a script for that. Have you run your import yet, Elena? I can share the script if you want, once I make it

Pocket to Wallabag Converter

@badri awww thank you for letting me know 🙏🏆

I have yet to get started… I plan to self-host via YH and get the process started once I receive my archive. This is super useful info. I will definitely try your workaround 🙌✨

@stereo @wallabag

@_elena of course 🙂 I left my very inefficient script running overnight, and it's processed some part of the articles (I was too lazy to work out a good system to let it tell me how much 😅). I'll upload it somewhere soon once I've confirmed it works as expected!

@stereo @wallabag
@_elena I'm running linkwarden and I'm happy with it. I also use it combined with floccus to sync my bookmarks between devices
@_elena @wallabag
I just recently converted to using @linkwarden too.
@japipes What's the difference between @wallabag and @linkwarden? I'm using #Wallabag for years now.
@joeneXtra
To me, the interface for LinkWarden looks a lot closer to Pocket, but the main reason I went with LinkWarden was I am self-hosting the server and I ran into issues configuring Wallabag. It also didn't import my Pocket links on the first try - not sure what the issue was there.

@_elena Glad you were in time to export your data. 💪

Did this about a month ago and discovered that many articles were no longer online and weren't saved to my permanent (sic) Pocket library (paid subscription).

I viewed this as an opportunity to review why I was saving things and get zen about it. 🤔

@wpcommaven ooooh thank you for letting me know this. Sorry to hear about the articles you couldn’t retrieve.

I wonder what my export will reveal (I don’t think I ever paid for Pocket library.)

Blame is all on me, my next reading/saving system will be FOSS and self-hosted

@_elena A lot I found in the Wayback Machine, but many were just gone.

Frankly I was grateful for the unintended housecleaning. Figured if I have to save the article to read later, what are the chances that I will.

Granted having the Pocket app on my mobile made for a lot of catch up while traveling, but still...#priorities

Good luck with the new set-up!

@wpcommaven @_elena ah yes, I spotted a few "disappeared" articles too, when I was running my Wallabag import. Also, I seem to have had a couple of web pages that were in ".rxml" format rather than ".html" which Wallabag couldn't handle, so I had to manually remove those before importing the rest

@_elena @wallabag

NEVER keep anything in the so-called cloud (some corporation's server somewhere) you do not have saved locally.

@_elena I wasn’t even aware people are actually using this crap and now all of a sudden there’s a big fuss on the net about it shutting down 😂

To me this was the first thing I was disabling after installing Firefox

@dminca
It was great as a simple way to have written web articles read aloud. I've switched to #PaperSpan for the same instant podcast function. Does Wallabag do read-aloud?
@_elena

@rochelimit that makes sense, I only tried it once and didn’t quite catch me.

I’m not even sure if you could’ve saved the articles in Notion or if Notion was there in the first place when Pocket was baked into Firefox 🤔

@_elena I was using Wallabag but switched to @readeck (available via YunoHost) and wrote about my journey.

I would encourage you to check out Readeck, it explicitly supports importing from Pocket. Highlights compared to Wallabag:

  • highlighting text and having them show up in one spot
  • saving a Mastodon thread
  • saving a video and automatically getting the transcript (so video topics show up in text search)
  • saving content behind login wall (you save what you see in your browser)
  • link sharing with the highlights
Bookmarking! I mean omnivoring! no, hoarding! no, bagging… wait, decking!?

I have been on a prolonged bookmarking/reading-later/digital-archiving solution journey. Here’s a quick run-down of my experience, this is not a review of these tools.

@shom thank you! 🙏 @readeck
@_elena@mastodon.social @readeck@mastodon.online I set it up during lunch one day after reading @shom@gts.shom.dev's experience. So easy and so good.

@knapjack thanks for letting me know! Super curious to read @shom ‘s article

@readeck

@knapjack so nice to know that writing it all up was helpful for someone!

My friend was _just_ talking about this but my sleepy naptime brain didn’t retain the name so I just double-checked.
“Readeck. Let me send you a link.” I had to laugh when he sent me the following:

Thanks to @linuxlads@mastodon.ie discussion on Pocket replacements I think I've switched over from Wallabag to Readeck for my bookmark/read-later needs. I ended up writing a bit about my journey but by the end it kinda turned into a praise fest for Readeck. [Bookmarking! I mean omnivoring! no, h...

@CasualPiDay small world and a weird example of network effect creating momentum for a non-networked service. hahahha @jochie just tagged me in this post: https://strangeweb.page/@jochie/114848668662470733

Yay, Readeck ALL THE THINGS!

Slowly populating my website with more project pages. This one is about self-hosting @readeck@mastodon.online, which I landed on after a very short adventure with Wallabag (I "blame" @shom@gts.shom.dev for that) https://is-here.com/project/read-later/ #Readeck #Wallabag #Instapaper

A very strange webpage
@_elena Why is mozilla killing a liked feature at the same time Chrome is introducing it (Reading List)? @wallabag
