Someone on another platform today told me a myth is "not in Homer, so it's not canon."

#StorytellingPSA: That's not how mythology works.

@TarkabarkaHolgy If the myth is not being sung by monks repeating the tune at staggered intervals, it's not canon.
@TarkabarkaHolgy oh shit. Didn't know there was only one mythos in the whole world.
@TarkabarkaHolgy this reminds me of the critique Roberto Calasso made of modern myths (esp. Wagner's Ring cycle): all trunk, no branches…

@TarkabarkaHolgy I had a similar argument with a mythology bigwig on Wikipedia many years ago. He wanted to delete the whole European fairy lore section because there were no primary sources. It was just me and him, and he had more clout.

I saved the lore, but I also stopped editing Wikipedia much after that.

@TarkabarkaHolgy canon is an extremely stupid concept and I don't understand why people care about it

@TarkabarkaHolgy

Silly people. And they didn't have them in Homer's day. The earliest dates for them are 14th century, both in Europe and The East, and... what? Oh. Never mind.

@TarkabarkaHolgy LOL wow, that’s narrow. bless their little heart
