One of them finally got divorced and had his Coming Out.
Another one turned out to have been the victim of sexual abuse as a boy, that's where the hate and anger came from. I feel like there must be a LOT more like him, especially in such an environment; sexual abuse does happen in churches and it's even harder to tell anyone about it.

Mainly: Lying with another man as you do with a woman - this means "at the same time." (like "keep looking both ways as you cross the street") Back then, paternal lineage was considered of utmost importance, and having an MMF threesome with the wife casts doubt for any subsequent pregnancy.
Those rules were within the same group of rules that included not having tattoos, not eating unclean meat, not wearing clothes of mixed fabrics, etc. I bet most of those church members do the majority of those things, and are not punishing themselves to death.
