Re previous post, anytime someone argues that doing [right thing] is useless because [government needs to act first] or [some weird paradox], these people need to take a harsh look at themselves. Be very wary of folks that try to stop *you* from improving the world. I fear they are trying to justify that they are doing fuck all by making sure you don't do anything useful either.
@bert_hubert You know that that's not what I said. I never said it's useless. I said you need policy as well. That does by no means imply you have to wait for policy.
@drmabuese You were the third person to come up with Jevon's paradox, so fear not, this is not all about you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j13oJajXx0M&list=RDj13oJajXx0M&start_radio=1

@bert_hubert Oh. I understand. Thanks for clarifying 🙈
@bert_hubert maybe I got something wrong, but I thought the previous post you were referring to was a boost of a reply to me, starting with my handle specifically, so in this case I don't see how people wouldn't make the connection to me. I'm the first to bring the AGC into a conversation, or how I used to do stuff on a 386, and so on. Still, I think it's irresponsible talking about coding and totally ignoring business and policy. Tech is not going to save the world either way.

@bert_hubert esp. love that wrt *personal* CO₂ emissions; while I'm willing to hear macroeconomic arguments out that extreme CO₂ pricing will move industries to places lacking such regulation (… lotsa "buts" to that), it makes no sense in the context of wastefully emitting CO₂ in your personal&professional capacity.

*You* are not going to move to a threshold country with low worker and environmental protection to *checks notes* drive your SUV to the store next door, or write inefficient code.

@bert_hubert My favorite is [because your change is but a drop in the ocean]. I'm a strong believer in a change brought by enough *you*s (us) that the rest and their governments eventually follow.
@ondra well I'm especially fond of programmers that control the software on a billion computers. They *are* the big wheels also.
@bert_hubert It always starts with soloists and if we didn't structurally dampen their optimistic sounds with nonsensical whataboutery, they'll soon enough be joined by a lot of people.
@bert_hubert But is there a name for when you're doing the right thing, but the competition does the cheaper wrong thing thing and spends the difference on marketing and lobbying?
@zash “a weak excuse”
@bert_hubert I expected "capitalism" :)
@zash I would say "moloch" (a game-theoretic concept)
@bert_hubert they seem to forget that as frederick douglass said power concedes nothing without a demand - and that demanding is the first step
