Specifically, the arms race comes down to scraping up as much data as possible before someone thinks to hold you accountable for using their writing/videos/audio/etc. without their express consent. Smash and grab, primitive accumulation, that sort of thing.
mce@Video_Game_King @amydentata @jplebreton there’s also a value proposition for an LLM scraper for collecting new material irrespective of its context (think page rank) but a search engine will value being able to point back to what it scraped.
But mostly? The new bois have never hit any consequences nor been shaped in anyway by the social conventions of the early web.
