@callisto I don't remember

@efi @callisto
Me either!

I always have to do the math! 😆

@ahimsa_pdx @efi @callisto is hard, age changes every year
@callisto From early results it appears I have been on tne Internet longer than about 1/3 of you have been alive; so I don’t want any of you telling me that you’re old.
@callisto My anecdotal experience is the fedi skews Gen X...but the good, funny, thoughtful, idiosyncratic, creative, activist Gen X, not the dominant Trump Gen X.
@pattykimura @callisto The spaces I'm in are mostly slightly younger than gen x but this poll does make me feel a little less ancient than I sometimes do because of all the millennials I talk to here.
@callisto Funnily, it‘s the third time today I cannot decide where to put my cross with my 40.5 years…
@led02 @callisto fellow 40.5 ‘r here. I clung to the 26-40 category proudly lol!! 😂
@sensitivityi @led02 hahaha I'm clinging to the next category lol. Would've broken it differently if I was allowed more than four choices.

@callisto

I'm 56 today 😁

@max @callisto
Auguri 🎂🥂

@Majden12

Dalla foto non si direbbe eh? È perché è vecchia pure lei, devo rifarle 😁

@callisto @agturcz Most here have dialed into a BBS before...

What does "dial" mean?

@Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz That last option...

I've actually heard "What's a landline?" before.

@catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz

Lol. I have a landline. It's a dial phone attached to the wall in my kitchen, and yes, I use it.

@pattykimura
Do you subconsciously avoid calling people whose numbers have a lot of nines and zeroes, because of the time involved in waiting for the dial to roll back?

@catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz

@eedly @pattykimura @catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto Once I've disassembled the dial, and when assembling I missed the break. So the dial had rolled back much faster. The switch was still able to recognise pulses properly. So, I've optimised calling in out household :)

@agturcz If I'd known that was possible back in the '80s…

@pattykimura @catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto

@eedly @pattykimura @catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto Probably that was switch-dependent. We had a modern switch, built in late 70s. Already electronic one. The old ones, with electromechanical circuits probably had problems with such optimisation, due to inertia.
@eedly @pattykimura @catsalad @callisto @agturcz
LoL no, but I know what you mean because I had a rotary as well.

@eedly @catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz

Lol. The wait after a 9 or 0 is a welcomed rest from the effort of dialing.

@pattykimura For me it was just enough of a speed bump to forget the next digit I needed to dial. And that was before the aging and concussions and parenthood-related mental lapses.

@catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz

@pattykimura @catsalad @callisto @agturcz
I just subscribed to a landline and I am looking for one of those.
@Frenezul0_o @catsalad @callisto @agturcz Our came with the house when we bought it, 25 years ago.
@pattykimura @catsalad @Frenezul0_o @agturcz Me too. I freak out when the cellular goes out (which is the only way I get internet, too). At very least I need a way to call in the outage! Having 911 could be handy too depending on what took down the cellular or electric.

@catsalad

Years ago I was in a mountain refuge with my son. When we got there I asked him to call his mother to tell her that everything was okay. He looked at the phone and asked me "how do you use it?"

It was an old telephone with a dial disk... 😁😁😁

@catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz I’ve seen a post somewhere of a person asking what the rj11 sockets in their newly acquired home were. 👴
@dawcas @agturcz @catsalad @Frenezul0_o Oh man. Dial-up internet and voice connection for every adult in the household, more if anybody worked from home, a fax machine, maybe an internet connection for the kids. So many frickin phone lines and exponentially more RJ11 jacks!!

@dawcas @agturcz @callisto @catsalad @Frenezul0_o

This reminded me, I predate the usage of RJ11. When I was a child an insulated wire passed through a small circular hole in the face plate in the wall, each of the two, or four, wires were held in place with a screw, the company owned the phone itself and I _think_ it was illegal to work on it yourself. Of course I was the same person then as I am now so, yes, I took them apart to see what was going on....

@catsalad at my last IT job one of my coworkers is in higher education for cybersecurity and i have no higher education at all. he didn't know the difference between VGA and DB9 serial ports until i pointed it out, he had never used a serial port before
@catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz Or what is a party line. Remember my dad trying to make a call and losing it trying to get all the kids off the line.
@oldgeek @catsalad @callisto @agturcz I had a rotary dial hanging on the wall connected to a party line with my next-door neighbour.
@Frenezul0_o @oldgeek @catsalad @agturcz And we couldn't talk on it in a thunderstorm, but we could watch the sparks fly out of the receiver.
@catsalad @Frenezul0_o @callisto @agturcz i thought you were talking about some operation older people have hahah

@Frenezul0_o @catsalad @agturcz I don't honestly remember but if I did, I didn't spend much time there. I did dial into CompuServe, AOL, and Prodigy at various times.

$0.32 per minute "local toll charges" doesn't sound like much until you've been online for two hours every day the month before your phone bill came, and then also you paid for the services by the minute. Yikes.

@Frenezul0_o I do know what "dial" means, and I know what a BBS is, but I've never dialed into one... I started with caramail then upgraded to IRC, and now, well... fedi. Also scrolled some USENET forums at one point n life.
@catsalad @callisto @agturcz
@catsalad @callisto @agturcz ah i miss those...
@Akki @catsalad @callisto @agturcz Yeh, you always knew where they were. When it rang, you automatically gravitated towards that one point.
@catsalad @callisto @agturcz
and also been in a Usenet newsgroup - in fact, I was surprised you didn't poll it ;)
@catsalad @callisto @agturcz 300 baud… and we loved it!
@callisto What a cruel range, 41-65…😅

@ssamulczyk @callisto Might've gotten more balanced results with:

1) 29 or younger
2) 30 - 44
3) 45 - 59
4) 60 or older

As generally you'd expect there to be not many under 15, and also few 75 or older.

And of course this would've put myself to a bit younger seeming bracket where I mentally belong!

@merri Sure, probably. I was just cringing I’ve been put in the same box as my parents… That’s funny because I’ve just turned 41 and my Father 65…😅 We are nothing alike in terms of computers and Internet or Fediverse for that matter…😅 @callisto
@ssamulczyk @merri @callisto my classmate very different from me. Very very different.
@ssamulczyk @callisto Yeah I don't even want to answer just because I'd be in that range, FML.
