I truly believe that the desire to automate your new computer setup is a symptom of trauma
@zachleat listen...you brick a laptop *one time*...
@konnorrogers it happens to the best of us

@konnorrogers @zachleat ITYM "you brick laptops one at a time"

which leads to you going for autoinstall(8) whenever possible, including the magic to restore ~ from backups and pull in all the packages you need.

@zachleat for sure, years of trauma, and feeling like you are building on quicksand, even more so for those who do systems administration of dozens of hosts.
@zachleat devs in companies that given a new laptop every year are patient zero for this.
@awfulwoman whew, my brain is thinking about widespread layoffs but *yes*
@zachleat haha I obviously interpret trauma in a very different way.
@zachleat I tried Migration Assistant for the first time recently when I upgraded my work horse from M1 to M4 and it was like swapping the harddisk and continuing working. Honestly a fantastic job, Apple! 👏
setting up a new computer is fun. why would anyone want to automate that?
