Hello Fedi friends!

My decision to upload the Fedi promo video to YouTube 2 weeks ago was really controversial.

@randahl posted a nice message about the video & encouraged his followers to like / comment on it so the YouTube algorithm would serve it to more people. He was inundated by hostile comments for days. Sorry Randahl!

Well, exhibit A of why this was a good decision in hindsight (see pic).

How else are people going to hear about the Fediverse?

As always, thanks for the support ❤️

@_elena @randahl For sure. Leaving the users behind in the monoverse is not doing anyone any good.

As the fediverse grows the monoverse will fight back. The story of a better alternativ need to be toll. Everywhere.

Thank again for you brilliant video. This is the way!

@_elena @randahl it's no good preaching to the already converted. Where do these zealots believe non-fedi people are going to see the video?

#SMH

@skribe @_elena @randahl Some people seem to think that if another person wasn't just born having the same opinion as them then they're broken or something and there's no need to convince them, they should already know.

I figure they should already know that's stupid as hell and don't worry about it.

@skribe @_elena @randahl it’s weird that people didn’t think this by default. I realized that since I’m not using nonfederated social media that I effectively have to way to reach everyone else.
@_elena @randahl I find it's great to post things on the central platforms as long as it's a few things;
1. A few days / hours late (and you say you can find it quicker on here)
2. It's pure promo content for the Fediverse and what we do on here, Like you said "How else are people meant to know about it"

There's probably a few other reasons such as being a business makes sense, but adopting the Fedi First Goal is a good idea for people who NEED to use these other platforms.
This is what I do. I publish to open places first and use places like YouTube as just free backup storage I know will eventually go down or shut down, which is fine by me. I'm just syndicating my stuff to you! My main hub will always get it first. @sam @_elena @randahl
@Samantha Xavia I would add one more use case. Use the centralized platforms to promote your content on the decentralized platform. You can post promotional videos or posts or short form content, but if they want to see your full length stuff, they need to visit your website or view it on PeerTube, for example.

This is similar to how many content creators post a shorter version of their videos on YouTube, but then tell them if they want to see the full length video, they need to go to their website, or Patreon, or Curiosity Stream. We can follow the same concept, but send them to PeerTube or our website that embeds PeerTube videos.
@_elena awesome vidéo, awesome work ❤️
Cc @randahl
@_elena @randahl sorry to hear that some people still don’t get it. Thanks for your fantastic work in promoting the Fediverse
@_elena I wonder why this would be controversial... how else would you reach people outside of the Fediverse besides sharing it on Social Media platforms that aren't the Fediverse?
And YouTube is clearly one of them, just with the difference that you share videos there.
There should just be a link to the Peertube video or other ways to access the Fediverse in the description imho

@_elena @randahl

That's so disappointing to hear. Sorry you had a bad experience.

No one should be attacking you for raising awareness for the open social web outside of its current shape. Like you said, how else would we grow this space?

We've experienced similar things in the past, so if you ever want advise (or to rant), the Newsmast team will always be a happy ear.

Now going to leave a positive comment on the video 🧡

@_elena @randahl I'm totally agree with you, we have to put our feet in the "enemy territory" to let people know about the fediverse, I don't see alternatives to wake up people.

@_elena @randahl For sure. Leaving the users behind in the monoverse is not doing anyone any good.

As the fediverse grows the monoverse will fight back. The story of a better alternativ need to be toll. Everywhere.

@sindum @_elena @randahl

I like «monoverse», there would also be «oligoverse».

@sindum @_elena @randahl

@_elena It's about OUTreach, after all.

@randahl

@_elena The video was really well done :-)

The more the message spreads, the better the awareness. Even if people don’t flock to the Fediverse, the fact that they are aware of its existence is already a massive win!

@randahl

Yeah, it is on YouTube or LinkedIn and has cookies - Bert Hubert's writings

So as a bit of a followup to my earlier post “What we in the open world are messing up in trying to compete with big tech ”: please (mostly) stop harassing people doing the right thing from the wrong platforms. We often see journalists, politicians, writers, NGOs and even software developers writing good things on independence from (US) big tech proprietary platforms. But also quite often, their work is hosted or syndicated on the very platforms they decry.

@_elena @randahl
It should go without saying that we should use the media that is right for us as users. There are no bans. Not even YT. We all have that much decision-making power.

@_elena @randahl

There are lots of intelligent people in the Fediverse. Unfortunately, they are not always socially smart. I wonder if being excluded (or self-excluded) from 'normal' society makes them unaware of how things work for 'normal' people. The lack of empathy, coupled with not receiving feedback from 'normal' people (because the Fediverse is a bubble), means they miss a lot of things.

I'm all for using bad platforms to talk about the good ones to bring more people here. 👍

@_elena @randahl you did nothing wrong
@_elena @randahl is the option the makes most sense! Loved the video! Send it to my dad, now he’s also intrigued! 🤗 keep it up!
@_elena Uhg, how could this be in any way controversial? Sone people here can be so awful.

@_elena @randahl

I am not surprised. Unfortunately, the Fediverse can sometimes exhibit a pretty toxic "holier than you" attitude. ☹️

@_elena @randahl Yeah I personally post on YouTube as part of a funnel that moves people to Mastodon, PeerTube, and my website.

I think that's the key here - make each video an opportunity for people to migrate :)

@_elena @randahl Of course the ad I saw displayed on the page is for FB. I've never seen an ad for FB before...
@_elena @randahl Honestly didn't understand the reason behind it being so controversial first and just expected it to be more backlash on YouTube for promoting something "unnormal". After reading the comments its honestly astonishing how you stand so much in your own way and cause without realising.
@_elena @randahl You have to go where people are right now. Nothing wrong with posting it on youtube. I hadn't seen it but I'll go find it and do the things to boost it. Thanks for your work and ignore the negative folks, you're a star.
@_elena posting on YT is not good or bad decision, it's medium that we can share. Bad if you see it problems, but still easy and available to most people... Heck TV's have YT merged in so YT is your to go instead of cable.
Talking about fediverse outside fedi also important. Recently have someone in discord for gacha game I play asked, Mastodon? I heard about it two years ago! It's still alive?
You can correlate big movements (Reddit API/X shitshow) and talk about fediverse or uptick in Users
@_elena @randahl folks don't want to hear about just another social media platform. They want to hear about the fediverse.
@_elena @randahl @mastodonmigration
Have I clearly understood ? You mean a lot of YouTube users want to overwrite the Fediverse ?
@_elena you have to go where the audience is or you'll never grow!

@_elena @randahl

Way to go Elena! Keep fighting the good fight. Ignore the detractors. Full speed ahead!

@_elena @randahl

I applaud you for publishing it on utube - simply to raise awareness with people whom might otherwise never heard of the Fediverse. So: thank you. And sorry for the negativity you had to endure

@_elena there's a huge difference between "controversial" and "shat on by idiots" #justSayin @randahl

@_elena

Old story. But when I read these things, I feel bad, because some of my friends who had joined that social network naively, throw that story in my face.

@_elena @randahl Premiere on Peertube and then syndicate elsewhere is an excellent communication strategy, there is even a name for it:
https://indieweb.org/POSSE

#POSSE #Fediverse #PeerTube #YouTube

POSSE

POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content.

IndieWeb
@_elena Sure it might seem antithetical and I think that if some place wants to link to the video, it should not link to the YouTube version, but it definitely also needs to be there so that people can find out about it.
@jana @_elena as I told upper maybe only a promotional video on youtube to a peertube full video. So even if the people share the YouTube video, interested people will have to see the peertube platform if they really want to discover freedom.

@_elena @randahl I agree

YouTube is not without its problems but that is exactly why this video needs to be there

The majority of people that you're trying to reach are on the big tech platforms

Most people don't use alternatives because they aren't aware that there are alternatives

Uploading to YT was the best way to get the message out and never feel bad about other peoples inability to see that

You're doing great work here

@_elena @randahl

This is a good philosophic question, that could be at the 'bac' exam in France: up to what point shall you go to promote your ideas?

Why promoting your ideas on a media you are attacking is OK and why isn't it OK?

Up to what point shall you not accept it?

Is that right then to insult the author?

Why hate is promoted on GAFAM social network?

And so on and so on.

I don't have answer regarding if its right or not. You haven't done nothing illicit, but against the principles you promote.

Only if the benefit is bigger than the cost, you will be right, won't you?

Whatever, chating about it is OK. Insulting obviously not.

By the way, your video is WONDERFUL.

❤️
