In conjunction with escalating conflict, Iranians are currently facing even more challenges to getting access to the internet than they did previously: restrictive blocking, filtering, and complete shutdowns of the internet. This makes it very difficult to stay abreast of the latest news and to contact friends and family.

Tor's Snowflake is a currently effective method of circumventing some of this censorship, and we need more volunteers to run more Snowflake proxies!

If you use Firefox, Chrome, Edge, or Brave, you can easily install an extension that allows you to become a Snowflake proxy whenever you open your browser. This is safe, private, and low risk.

*Right now*, I'm acting as a Snowflake proxy for nine different users just by typing away here on the fedi.

If you want to do something to help people access the internet in Iran, and other places where blocking and filtering are common, become a Snowflake proxy today.

Snowflake

@al I'm afraid Snowflake has been defeated. At least in Russia -- one of the largest consumers of Tor. This isn't really representative of the whole world as Russia has some quite advanced censors, but I wouldn't be surprised if China managed to block Snowflake too
@SobbV0hoX My understanding is that it's complex and evolving problem, and that Snowflake does work for some Russians. Censorship in Russia (as everywhere) often varies by region, city, and ISP, so what works for one person might not work for their neighbor. Here's the latest report from the volunteers who run the snowflake-01 bridge, and you can see that Russian users are in the thousands. https://opencollective.com/censorship-circumvention/projects/snowflake-daily-operations/updates/2025-may-update

@SobbV0hoX You're definitely right that censorship in Russia is escalating and getting more sophisticated. The last couple of years have seen dramatic change in that sense.
@al No, you acted as a proxy for 9 people in the past 24 hours. It's green if it's active.
