A question for those who are anal about tagging music files; when tagging a DJ mix album, do you set the 'album artist' field as 'various artists' or the DJ name?

Go on, I'll chuck in a poll while I'm at it.

(jeez, not even sure what to use for hashtags)

@ellieraejaye Always the album artist 🩷 We have a LOT of trance albums and songs, so it's imperative for us to use both the Album Artist and Artist tags on any music files.

(At least check, we've got somewhere around 2900-3000 music files with the "Trance" listed somewhere in the Genre tag.)

@SleepyCatten having the album artist as the DJ name does make it easier to find, and that's what I tend to do.

What's got me thinking about it is that I'm re-ripping my old Cream Live Two CDs, which is three CDs mixed by different DJs. I tend to go with setting the album artist as the DJ as it is a performance by the DJ and isn't just a compilation album but, in this particular case, by doing that it splits the mixes effectively into three separate albums. Not sure how I could have them as their DJ names but still keep the album together as one three-disc album. šŸ¤”

@ellieraejaye Let's see what we do in that scenario.

[checks]

Okay. We don't have a perfect solution, but we group our music files together physically in such a way that it doesn't cause issues in Poweramp, or the global search in WACUP.

Let's take In Search Of Sunrise 16. It has 3 CDs, so the Album Artists there are:

  • CD1 - Markus Schulz
  • CD2 - Giuseppe Ottaviani
  • CD3 - Sunlounger

We would find this by searching either for In Search Of Sunrise or browsing to the folder directly:

[Music Directory] > In Search Of Sunrise > folders in format (YYYY) [name of album] [disc number]

In the case of Solarstone Presents Pure Trance V9, there are 2 CDs:

  • CD1 - Stoneface & Terminal
  • CD2 - Solarstone

Searching for Solarstone shows the album, as it's in the Album Name. In terms of physical location, it's under a Solarstone Presents Pure Trance folder, so that keeps them all together.

One could, we suppose, add the overall mixing person under Album Artist too, but we've not found we've ever needed to.

Some tagging programs give the option for additional tags like the below, which might help.

If you have access to the Remixed By and Album Artist tags, you could use those perhaps to add the overarching DJ to the Remixed By fields maybe?

@SleepyCatten that's interesting, I don't have a Remixed By tag. That could be useful though! I do have the option of using some custom tags however, I could explore using those. I do have an 'original album' tag, maybe I could try using that. For now, I think just searching for 'cream live two' would do the job.
