"...the data backs up the vibes. The less time you spend in a car, the more likely it is you backed Zohran Mamdani."

NYC's Upset Election Was Drawn Along An Odd Line: Car Ownership

Car ownership and transit ridership serve as a shorthand for someone's entire living situation — and, apparently, their politics.

@TheWarOnCars wondering if this has anything to do with radio?
@dinandmentink @TheWarOnCars even outside the political space, you only have to listen to the radio for a short while to hear how car-forward it is, particularly the advertising. It's particularly stark when there's a nearly identical medium (podcasts) that has a big demographic distinction.
@dinandmentink @TheWarOnCars Was there a difference in focus here? Did Cuomo do a bunch of radio and the other guy more social media and stuff?
@crazyeddie @TheWarOnCars I just meant that people in cars more often listen to local radio at specific hours and thus the same sort of news and advertising.

@TheWarOnCars

Is there a particular reason New Yorkers who take transit dislike Cuomo 🤣

@brewski @TheWarOnCars I mean Mamdani pretty explicitly campaigned on a platform of expanding and bolstering public transit within the city, whereas the point that was most discussed by Cuomo was increasing police presence on the subway. Cuomo's focus betrays his and his wealthy backers' perspective—they have property outside city limits, get there by driving and want nothing less than unsupervised interactions with working class New Yorkers. It literally all goes back to class.
@brewski @TheWarOnCars I do think that's as likely as the "in cars they hear his ads on the radio."
It's interesting that a car-focused publication would notice this.
I hope and pray the trend is to upset car culture as well as elections :) :)
@TheWarOnCars Correlation is not causation
@davetheresurrector @TheWarOnCars no wonder Trump wanted to kill the toll zone on nyc
@TheWarOnCars to want more car space is wanting to be able to invade the space where others live.
@TheWarOnCars To quote a great show, "What kind of asshole owns a car in New York City?"
