πŸ“± Built to last

Your new smartphone or tablet must last longer, be easier to fix, and use less energy.

As new EU Ecodesign and Energy Labelling laws have entered into force, here’s what changes:

πŸ”§ Easier to repair – spare parts for at least 7 years
πŸ’§ More durable against drops, water, dust
πŸ’‘ Labelled for energy use, battery life, durability
πŸ’Ά €20 billion savings for consumers by 2030
🌱 Using 1/3 less energy vs. doing nothing

Smart rules. Smart savings. All win.

@EUCommission we really need to force smartphone manufacturers to have expandable storage options like they did in the past 😭
@mintydev @EUCommission It’s called cloud storage and if you lose your device or it fails you can still get your data πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ SD cards were hugely unreliable in phones which is why Apple never used them and Samsung are abandoning them.
@kDelta @EUCommission I just don't think it's fair for an extra 128gb of device storage to cost €100, when the equivalent micro SD card is like €10-20. Also, I never found them to be unreliable.
@mintydev @EUCommission Which is exactly why when someone tries to buy a 256GB device from me I tell them to get the 128GB and pay for cloud storage with all its benefits. 😁 You may not have had a problem yet, but the day it happens you’ll wish you never used an SD card. 😞 Look into cloud options like Proton β˜ΊοΈπŸ‘
@kDelta @EUCommission things like Proton and Nextcloud are definitely tempting, haha
@mintydev @EUCommission I used to used to just pay for Apple iCloud for the ease of it all, but due to the way things are going I wanted to get my data away from the USA hence I moved to Proton. 😁
@kDelta @EUCommission Nice! I also use Proton services, but I originally got onboard due to privacy concerns of using Google, but now I also appreciate the fact that it's a European service. Nextcloud is also European btw; it's German (even if originally developed by an American company many years ago).

@kDelta @mintydev @EUCommission cloud storage is good, but there's something to be said for an offline copy.

I think the option to use an SD card is excellent, when you pair it with an off device copy (preferably with a decent snapshot backup)

@kDelta @mintydev @EUCommission pay monthly intsead of a one time payment? What a weird idea...

Never had an SD card fail n 10+ years. And if it did, I wouldn't be sad, because I just backup anything important anyway.

@lhp @mintydev @EUCommission Where do you back it up to?

@kDelta @mintydev @EUCommission my laptop, which in turn has a backup regularly too.

Now, the only actually important thing on my phone is my ~150GB music library, which is always up-to-date on all my computers anyway...

@lhp @mintydev @EUCommission Cool, but how is the laptop backed up? Where is it's backup?
@kDelta@mastodon.ie @lhp A NAS? :)
@ben @kDelta I am not really the kind of person who would run a dedicated storage server at home. I just rsync the directories which have important data over to my workstation, from where I can fetch it onto my uni workstation next time I am at the office.

@kDelta @mintydev
a) my home workstation
b) my uni workstation
c) an external drive which is solely used for backups which I store in a safe

I have the feeling you are somehow trying to find a way to shill cloud storage again, aren't you?

@lhp @mintydev Nope, just making sure you have things stored safe. Many back up to a hard disk and leave it next to their system. That is not an ideal solution 🀭 Cloud storage is an option which can help, but as long as you are keeping a few resgular backups and at different locations this is safe, and may even be a safer option in some circumstances.
@kDelta
Sure, I am going to yeet the only copy of my data at a third party and trust them with it.
Also, quite a wild claim about SD card reliability - I've had maybe one card die on me ever, and it was a cheap brand going on for longer than it had any right to. (As for Apple not using them, I'm thinking that's just along the lines of basic greed, though of course I have no confirmation for that, nor for Apple or Samsung not using SD cards because of reliability issues.)
@mintydev @EUCommission
@ozzelot @mintydev @EUCommission "Also, quite a wild claim about SD card reliability - I've had maybe one card die on me"
@kDelta
Okay, fine. Do you have any proper research, by the manufacturers you mention or otherwise, that backs up the non-inclusion of SD card slots in phones?
@mintydev @EUCommission
@ozzelot @mintydev @EUCommission It's some pretty basic IT stuff, you keep backupS of your important data on a reliable disk and you keep them on separate sites, this predates the cloud trend.

@kDelta
That was published long after the decisions of Apple and Samsung to not include SD card slots and therefore could not have lead to their decisions
@ozzelot Good luck with your data. Have a nice day.
@kDelta
I am :) Less nice for not having proof of any particular reasons why Apple doesn't include an SD card slot, though. Truly an enigma.
@kDelta
(Also it's one guy who hasn't even said one card out of how many and the circumstances of their use - you send that to me as research? Or proper? Nah.)
