📱 Built to last

Your new smartphone or tablet must last longer, be easier to fix, and use less energy.

As new EU Ecodesign and Energy Labelling laws have entered into force, here’s what changes:

🔧 Easier to repair – spare parts for at least 7 years
💧 More durable against drops, water, dust
💡 Labelled for energy use, battery life, durability
💶 €20 billion savings for consumers by 2030
🌱 Using 1/3 less energy vs. doing nothing

Smart rules. Smart savings. All win.

@EUCommission and os security updates ?

@SRAZKVT @EUCommission the linked press release says:

“ longer availability of operating system updates, at least 5 years from the date the last unit model is sold”

Which is great!

@slothrop @SRAZKVT oohhhh! From the date of last sold is really a nice way to write that rule! Doesn't punish people who buy it on the tail end to save money. e.g. when the new model comes out
@slothrop NICE! Really appreciate it, thanks EU! Fairphone will have to change nothing from the way they operate, btw.
@EUCommission great. Can we now stop bombing iran, yemen and stop shipping weapons to Israel please?
@jubei Let’s curb the whataboutism here. This level of offtopic belongs on xitter or something.
@richlv Thanks for your opinion but please permit me to stage my protests wherever and whenever I want. It's like your country's parliament is convening to vote on a new bill about labor laws and while that's happening you're forbidding me to stand outside and protest about a different topic. I will protest whatever I want thank you very much.
@jubei @richlv poor guy doesn't want to hear that his country helps kill innocent people... Thanks you for voicing it, Jubei!

@jubei European Union does not even remotely seem to be doing what you mentioned, so you're either deeply confused, or a troll.

In any case, this is not "staging a protest" but offtopic whataboutism.
If you are not a troll or somebody with major personal issues currently, your time and energy would be much more impactful in other activities.

@EUCommission Anything there preventing providers from just jacking up the costs of spare parts beyond all viability?
Hello @agnew_hawk!
Yes, our new Ecodesign rules include measures that promote the availability of spare parts at reasonable prices. You can find more details here: https://europa.eu/!vfFGMB
In addition, we will also make it easier for consumers to find repairers, through a new online European Repair Platform that is foreseen to become operational in 2027.
Directive on repair of goods

Promoting repair improves the sustainable consumption of goods by consumers

@EUCommission @agnew_hawk oh, so you can only answer to safe questions, huh...

@EUCommission @agnew_hawk

Sorry but wouldn't 2026 not be a more reasonable aim ?

I hope for any action asap

@EUCommission
Do Vendors have to document how long the software will be maintained and updated or did this MOST important part in the Lobby?

@Zugschlus You mean the OS? Someone already looked that up:

@SRAZKVT@tech.lgbt @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu the linked press release says: “ longer availability of operating system updates, at least 5 years from the date the last unit model is sold” Which is great!

chaos.social
@Zugschlus @EUCommission Yes, that’s what it says. If you read it.
@Zugschlus @EUCommission if I remember correctly they have to provide OS updates for 5 years after end of sale.

@EUCommission "die" in the lobby, I wanted to task.

So I also left out the most important part.

@EUCommission That's all very good, can you make them smaller, and without any kind of tracking or behavioral advertising? Smartphones are technical marvels, but I hate them for their role they play in today's society. So I will stick with my 20 yo Nokia :)

@EUCommission “longer availability of operating system updates, at least 5 years from the date the last unit model is sold”

This is also an excellent step towards more sustainable and secure smartphones.

While we definitely need to work on many things in the EU, I am thankful for all the good we have already accomplished: Schengen, GDPR, EAA, DMA, ESPR, and the Whistleblower Directive, to name just a few.

@EUCommission Is it possible to have an open ecosystem instead of walled garden ? Spare parts for up to 7 years is good, but regarding software, is it possible to get security updates for more than 3 years ?

@ydroneaud Not just possible, but now even a legal requirement for five years after the model is removed from the market.

@EUCommission Yes, but you got it wrong again. Why limit the best performances to A? Reverse it, number it upwards and make it last! Next time, try not to create another label with planned obsolescence built in!

Your friendly A+++++ dishwasher

Jokes aside, I hope the direction is good!

@naufraghi @EUCommission So just like language level, right? A is lowest, B is better, ...
@EUCommission we really need to force smartphone manufacturers to have expandable storage options like they did in the past 😭
@EUCommission And thanks to #brexshit the manufacturers can sell the left-over crap in the UK!

@EUCommission

This is a great first step.

For the next step, I would suggest requiring manufacturers to open up their systems when ending support for Hardware or the OS.

This would reduce electronic waste, promote development of alternative and specialized OS versions for children and seniors, and make the second-hand market truly running.

@doodee
That would be great & necessary!

I'm afraid that a lot of no-name vendors will show up, throw a bunch of phones on the market, and then disappear to avoid the long-term support.
Just to start the next company...
@EUCommission

@EUCommission "up to 7 years"
don't you mean "at least 7 years"?
Thanks for flagging this, @csepp! We have edited our post now. 😊
@EUCommission Do you fine the companies , who don’t do that? And does the money goes into something for all the citizen, maybe infrastructure help? I know, you can’t answer that on a social media post.
@EUCommission the kind of stuff the US government will complain about even though it’s needed worldwide because of their precious tech companies needing to do anything they want.
This post put me in a bad mood because it reminded me of what I don’t have.
@soulfirethewolf
It will probably affect the US market too, eventually, even if there aren't any rules on the books
@EUCommission This means you have to actually enforce it, though. Not like the DMA.
@EUCommission Thank you for pushing for better technology for all!

@EUCommission

What is needed:

- easy to buy and change batteries
- published SoC spec with open drivers
- ability to unlock boot

@EUCommission You've made some good improvements. Hopefully those not lucky enough to live in EU will benefit somewhat from these rules as well, with phones made for global markets.
@EUCommission
you gotta love the EU!
@EUCommission Much appreciated! Thank you!
@EUCommission Although long time overdue, thank you, EU! ❤🇪🇺
@EUCommission
Support wise people, punish monopolistic parasites like google, apple etc and the problem will be solved.
Here is an example of wise people who are doing something great:
https://mastodon.social/@murena/114733388357872570
@MartinaNeumayer looks like (extra ungoogled?) fork of LineageOS. Some people here https://mastodon.social/@shonky/114734100672410030 want updates, and this is one of options.
@uis Yes, e/OS is an very privacy focused and totally degoogled system. Pretty good piece of code, imho. At least worth trying. Yes, that's an nice option especially for people who have phones not being supported by the original manufacturers anymore. They can use officially supported system images or community ones as well.

@EUCommission Easy to rule a market in which not a single unit is built in the EU... try to do the same for cars 😄 well, wait a few more years and we'll have no cars built here

Anyway, I like the new rules even if I don't think they can be enforced.

@EUCommission what about being able to install an operating system of your choice?

@EUCommission

Good.

This rules should be mandatory to other personal consumer electronics devices too.

For example, mp3 players or wireless earphones.

@EUCommission Maybe you should start by forcing manufacturers to provide longer OS support. 3 Years from Samsung for flagship models is absolutely laughable. Budget models are often out of support before you even buy them!
@shonky @EUCommission I recommend reading the whole article behind the link. It says there that manufacturers will be required to have OS updates for at least 5 years after end of sale. That's a huge improvement especially since before it was from the start of sale.
@shonky I think better way would be mandating ability to install OS of user's choice. And it is more in line with other rules by @EUCommission and EU in general.
@EUCommission everything should be made to be easy to repair and antiobsolescence
@EUCommission ban wireless charging maybe? Horribly inefficient
