The fragmentation and purity tests on the fediverse are beginning to grate. Vulnerable communities need to ensure their own safety, but some of the politics feel like they're very far away from those needs and closer to high school infighting. Globally, nationalism is rising with corporate social media as one of its weapons, leading to real deaths and true fascism with all its harms. We're going to need to collaborate despite our differences. Let's pull it together.
@ben I don't think it's just the Fediverse. My experience with the local "Indivisible" folks is that they're often far more interested in shitting on potential allies than accomplishing anything, and I'd accuse them of being deliberate trolls, except that they have a long history in local activist communities and I've met them in real life.

@ben

But what does "vulnerable communities need to ensure their own safety" mean?

Forever on the web, we could browse to crap that upset us. Misinfo was blogged. These things don't need to be controlled on a network without algos.

Focus on crime and intentional harassment (even left towards the right). Unwanted tagging. Hashtag pollution. Focus mods on that. Have whatever rules you want for your server and block servers with lots of abusive users, but otherwise keep it as open as possible.

I haven't seen that.

But I make an effort to keep my timeline focused. Maybe that's the difference?
