So I have been running GrapheneOS for a bit and I am looking for the best SMS app. Any help?

@ahasty What exactly are you missing from the built-in one?

But you could try Fossify Messenger or Quik SMS

@truls46 I think what I miss the most is reactions and reply... also Do any of the FOSS ones do RCS
@ahasty @truls46 Unfortunately, RCS is only done by just a select few apps across all major ecosystems, such as Google Messages. On Android, I believe it is only Google Messages, whereas it is iMessage on iOS and iPadOS.

@ahasty

Hm, "reply" is a most basic feature of such an app and is most certainly available in GrapheneOS' SMS app. I don't know what you mean with reactions though.

SMS is an extremely limited protocol and it's plain text only. Any emojis you can see are still sent and received using text (e.g. :) for 🙂)

I think Google's messages app is the only one implementing RCS at this point. Apparently there is some proprietary code involved which isn't (yet?) available to OpenSource projects.

@ahasty

I used to use @signalapp but the developers pried that feature away from us.

I don't have any SMS recommendations for you, but I'll come back to this thread to see what others recommend.

Fortunately for me, most of the people I talk to regularly moved over to Matrix. It's just 2FA from crap sites that don't support TOTP, you know... like my legacy financial institutions. 🤦‍♂️ It a funny thought that cat pictures have more security than bank accounts.
