Medications that may interact with heat (This seems important ☀️☀️☀️)
@Natasha_Jay and I depend upon Sentralin to stay balanced 😱
@alexadeswift @Natasha_Jay I used to be on it. Now another which is also on the list.
@Natasha_Jay Hi from 'citalopram makes me feel like every day is ten degrees hotter'
@RolloTreadway @Natasha_Jay Ohhh... My wife is in citalopram. I wonder if that's why she takes hit days worse than me...
@Natasha_Jay Lithium!!! Super important. Not w heat by itself, but too much sweating can cause overdose easily as the lithium stays inside the body n then the concentration increases too much. Generally anything that has a narrow therapeutic range but ain't eliminated w sweat, be careful.
@Natasha_Jay Altho, if't was eliminated w sweat, but then ya drink more than usual as a result'a sweating more, that'd also be bad as rather than overdose, this could cause a too low dosage. For the record, lithium poisoning's a life-threatening emergency.
@Natasha_Jay thanks. I take a few of those and had no idea.
@Natasha_Jay You forgot anti epilleptica which either leave the body to fast from sweating ( seizure ) or not fast enough from dehydration ( all sorts of issues )
@Natasha_Jay What does "interact with heat" mean? Does it mean we need to keep them cool, or they don't work if we get hot when we take them, or something else...?
@cassolotl @Natasha_Jay if you’re on any of these medications you should probably research it because the effects are different. It’s not always obvious when you read the side effects either. For example “raises resting heart rate” can be a big deal when hiking up a mountain on a hot day (speaking from experience here).
@Natasha_Jay oops! I see mine on that list! 😬

@Natasha_Jay

Holy shit. TIL. Thank you.

@Natasha_Jay stims make you sweat, so heatwaves can make dehydration a genuine risk.

I can recommend snacking on fruits & berries, juice & especially milk also helps with restoring your electrolytes and salts!

@Natasha_Jay that is solidly most of my meds.
@Natasha_Jay how are they supposed to interact with heat? Is it possible that they are less effective or what happens?
@Natasha_Jay Not to mention spironolactone, while while it doesn’t directly interact with heat (to my knowledge), it does make you dehydrate quicker. Keep water handy on hot days. You’ll need it.

@Natasha_Jay @dr_hossa23 you mean keep the pills in the fridge?

Edit: Nevermind, just read the bottom of the infographic. 🙄

@Christian_Freiherr_von_Wolff @Natasha_Jay yes *but*…

The issue with many of these is that they have side effects that affect sweating, heat production, heart rate, or how the body retains water and salt. Some become a problem when you get dehydrated.

The short answer for anyone taking any medication is be careful, keep an eye on how you’re feeling, and have a plan for what to do if you feel ill.
