Some time in the garden hunting #POTA in the shade. Then a first attempt at calling CQ #CW on 17m.
@F4LUB A G90 and an X6100. Which is your preferred radio?
@Jeremy I like both. I do not have the x6100 for as long as the G90. I like the x6100 with a powerbank for backpacking. (But still hoping for an even more compact solution when I get enough cw practice.)
The G90 has been my first rig, and I have used it QRP from the start. I plan to try an activation with both switching along the way to get a comparison.
If both swr meters are similar, the g90 ATU seems a little bit better in matching.
@F4LUB I used to have a G90, but found the screen to be too small to display clearly all the information. The screen on the X6100 looks wonderfully large.
@Jeremy @F4LUB I sometimes miss my Xiegus, had both of those before. I especially liked the G90 as it would tune just about any piece of wire I connected to. Once I tried to tune my balcony railing on 40M, no problem. It was a workhorse for sure but suffered an untimely death after a few years of use.
The X6100 was a mixed experience, the form factor was quite perfect for my use and the ATU worked nicely but it had lots of software problems with digital modes and computer connectivity. Also when one was fixed, another feature would stop working and when the G90 died, I just decided to sell both and get something to replace them.
@oh2cil @F4LUB Interesting feedback Marcus. It is disappointing when a good bit of kit is let down by build quality and reliability. I wonder if we will see as many Xiegus in the second hand market in 20+ years time as we do the big three.
@Jeremy @oh2cil I do not like yo buy disposable hardware, but I would be very happily surprise to get 20 years of usage. :)
@F4LUB @Jeremy Well, the G90 has been around since 2018 according to https://www.rigpix.com/xiegu/xiegu_g90.htm ans there isn't a single used one for sale on ebay, which is weird.
One day I might still buy another xiegu, if I find a reasonably priced 5105.. that doesn't have the USB which was the source of many problems on the 6100 so that might just work for travel use :)

@F4LUB @Jeremy Yep, I hate disposable hardware too. My current HF radios are Icom IC-706 from the nineties, a bit newer IC-703 for portable use and for VHF/UHF I've got a Kenwood D700. Reliable stuff.
@oh2cil @Jeremy I was looking for an x5105, but no more production and no second hand. I only saw two G90 second hand but after I bought mine. The x6100 I bought second hand was the second I saw, the first one was gone to fast for me.
@F4LUB @oh2cil The issue with the second hand market is, either no one wants to get rid of their kit because it's too good or it's so bad it's already broken and unsellable.
I expect Kenwood (Trio), ICOM, and Yaesu fall into the first category. I did sell my G90 but would not sell my FT1000MP, FT817, FT818, or FT2980. My 40-year old Trio 2m handheld, which was my first radio, is a bit off-frequency but retained for sentimental reasons.
@F4LUB @Jeremy Yep the 5105 seems to be very hard to find. It's a shame really, as the Xiegu 5105/6100/6200 are a rare breed, a very compact HF transceiver with built-in ATU and battery, can't think of many non-Xiegu alternatives.
@Jeremy The screen was not my motivation as I was about to go for a G106, but it definitely is big.
