😤 WhatsApp in 2012: “Companies know literally everything about you, your friends, your interests, and they use it all to sell ads.”

🤑 WhatsApp in 2025: “We’re introducing […] ads […] to help you find […] products you’re interested in.”

@threemaapp Before Meta, they charged 1€/1$ per year to ensure independence and security. People got mad at that time for having to pay such a simbolic amount, and eventually Meta bought WhatsApp. Nowadays we are facing enshittification and no privacy at all. Just a reminder that for approximately the amount of 1€/1$ year we would get rid of all those despicable features
@juniyonul no, we would not, as that would still depend on a corporation doing the right thing in absence of incentives for exactly that. When you get your friends and family to switch away from WhatsApp, have a look at the xmpp ecosystem. #snikket is working very well. Avoiding enshittification is done by going FOSS all the way. *drops mic*
@kdieter Hahahaha you're completely right. A few years ago, I managed to move many friends to Signal. Unfortunately, none of them wanted to stay after a few days.
@juniyonul @kdieter Did they mention why they didn't like Signal?
@dark_phoenix @kdieter they argued that when they received messages most of the time the Signal icon didn't appear at the top part of the phone screen, and so they missed many messages (which at that time was partially true, since I experienced the same behaviour)
@juniyonul
(Nearly) correct! I'd gladly pay some amount to free Whatsapp from tracking and upcoming ads.
But I think that Meta would need to charge more than 1$/year as our data might well be worth more. 🫤
@threemaapp
@threemaapp well thank god I never used whatsitcalledapp
@threemaapp tbf 2012 they wheren't connected to Meta bs.
@threemaapp google happend the same thing xd
@threemaapp гарний тролінґ 🤘
@threemaapp I'm SUPER excited to be able to easily start a conversation with new businesses about a product or service they’re promoting in Status!
@threemaapp tbf 2012 was before zucc bought it and shoved it into his gallery of horrors.

@threemaapp Their first mistake was assuming I needed their help finding products I'm interested in.

Their second mistake was assuming that there are any products I'm interested in.

@threemaapp even if u were bought by meta or google, u would do same thing. There should be some standards like SMS so that anyone from any phone can contact anyone anytime

@threemaapp

True, it's time to switch to Signal xD

@threemaapp you know like, how did they even train llama in the first place?

@threemaapp

Read on Heise.de , that the #WhatAds might hit EU not earlier than 2026.

Which gives me still more time to convince a good chunk of WA folks in my contacts. Once I see the 1st Ad - I will ultimately move away.

In case the dudes still can SMS / MMS me, if they are not open for a different App (Signal , Threema, etc)
