@euractiv_agri The Green Claims Directive is about to become the latest victim of the EPP's crusade against the remaining Green Deal legislation, according to a letter obtained by #Euractiv
In the letter, sent to Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall, the EPP’s two shadow rapporteurs ask the EU executive to pull the plug on legislation to curb #greenwashing, the Green Claims Directive
The proposed rules would require companies to substantiate & verify environmental claims, protect consumers

from misleading environmental branding.

But the #Directive “risks unduly hindering sustainability communication through procedures that are overly complex, administratively burdensome, and costly,” write the rapporteurs, citing the #Draghireport and the EU's need to sharpen its global competitiveness.

In addition to the Green Claim Directive, the centre-right group has also considered targeting both the forest and soil monitoring legislation.

Yet, the group might not need to directly oppose the forest monitoring file, which aims to improve knowledge and data collection on forests, to axe it. The #Commission has recently hinted that it could withdraw the proposal altogether due to the lack of ambition in the Council position.

The association is asking Paris to “abstain from voting” on the text, arguing that postponing the directive could give it “another chance."

A diplomatic source told Euractiv that at least four delegations within the EPP are against the move.
