πŸŽ‰ I'm happy for Peertube! The campaign has ended and they have reached their final goal: https://support.joinpeertube.org/en/

@davidrevoy Peertube seems to suffer from the classic "chicken and egg" problem: why should I join peertube when there's nothing on there I want to watch.

Nebula has exactly the same problem, except that one has to pay to join, which makes it even worse.

@MikeH Step by step, some creators are uploading their work also on Peertube (I do that).

https://sepiasearch.org/ helps to find more contents.

@davidrevoy Thanks, David, that's a useful looking search engine. I recall search being rather tricky last time I tried.

@davidrevoy @MikeH Don't forget that the educational sector. Most educational publishers now use embedded YouTube in their online materials, often including all advertising trackers. This is a clear violation of the the GDPR. With PeerTube there is now a good alternative, and GDPR-compliance gives a clear incentive to migrate.
Here is a (Dutch) article we did the investigations for: https://destadsbron.nl/nl/Digitaal_onderwijs (a local translation with Firefox is quite accurate)

@MikeH @davidrevoy I'd say right now, the balance is actually lopsided on the side of having too few people watching and interacting versus a solid collection of passionate content creators at the moment. One reason being a lack of discoverability without a complex algorithm.

Of course, not even remotely comparable to a giant like YT, but especially in tech (E.g. German publisher heise also runs their own instance now), as well as LGBTQ+ and FLOSS content, there are some real gems already.

@MikeH yep ask the same yesterday in my fediverse bubble, if there were other YT content creators which also have a Peertube mirror, but didnt get any great replys till now. At least Heise the publisher of computer magazines in Germany now has its own peertube running and mirrors parts of it YT content there.

Btw i also donated something yesterday because i like the project!

@MikeH @davidrevoy The problem with Peertube is that there is no payout system, thus creators are not motivated. Maybe if there was some Stripe integration, then maybe.

@dasmatus as a creator with YouTube revenues, I can assure you that the few bucks of the ads isn't the number one issue for many small or medium creators (who need to rely on patreon\tipeee\etc more to pay the bills). The main attraction to a platform like YouTube is the discoverability via the search engine or the recommendation system. The issue is then more about promising to creators large number of views , new visitors, and growing audience size, than ads revenues IMO.

@MikeH

@MikeH @davidrevoy That is a valid point. β€œWhy switch if … ?” The good news is that more good content is coming. For example, German IT news outlet @heiseonline started their own instance:

https://peertube.heise.de/

If I look at the viewer numbers I can conclude that people like it.

@davidrevoy PeerTube rocks! I'm glad that they hit the goal. The entirety of my video editing creative outlet is there.
