As a film score buff, it only just *now* clicked for me that Basil Poledouris' Conan the Barbarian is very much an homage to the previous few decades of genre Western (as in "cowboys and Indians") film scores.

Yes, there are many shades of Carmina Burana. That's what I had always likened it to.

But listen closely. There are decidedly enormous amounts of the score that would almost be at home in a 50s to 70s American Western film.
