I checked out the homepage of a leading national newspaper in the US to see if / how they would cover #NoKingsDay. Crickets for now (no surprises there).

Something else I noticed on the homepage: an article about Instagram. Not linking to it on purpose, but just wanted to say that the way mainstream newspapers cover social media it's as if the fediverse didn't even exist. That's my biggest pet peeve.

I'll be emailing the reporter about #Pixelfed. Not sure what else I can do - suggestions?

@_elena no kings day is getting coverage in canada, mainstream on the CBC but links are blocked in the US. If you have vpn maybe? https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/no-kings-protests-saturday-1.7559428

@_elena 😌 good luck for today
@galleryelle oh I’m not in the U.S… I’m not even in Paris today (where I think there might be a march). I just joined my extended family in Burgundy so I’ll be witnessing things from the side 🥲
@_elena wee update for you: https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/no-kings-protests-1.7561546 it’s being updated live, last update an hour ago and top of my feed again

@galleryelle @_elena the link isn't blocked in the US; I'm looking at it from the US right now; no need to get on a sketchy VPN.
@offby1 @_elena great! It is blocked for some areas. I had a few friends test for me and they couldn’t access (all in California)
…updated original post :)
@galleryelle @_elena Just curious: who is blocking those links?
@nukleos @_elena im not sure but i think it’s connected to this big thing last year about canadian news and large US media needing to pay canadian reporters for linking to their work (so everyone got fairly compensated for good reporting). Big newsfeeds refused to share royalties and so some canadian news was cut off from being able to be accessed both within and outside of canada on some platforms https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/online-news-act-meta-facebook-1.6885634
Canadians will no longer have access to news content on Facebook and Instagram, Meta says | CBC News

The social media giant Meta has confirmed that it will end access to news on its social media sites for all Canadian users before Bill C-18, the Online News Act, comes into force.

CBC
@galleryelle @_elena Ah, so it’s Meta doing the blocking? Good thing I don’t use F*book or I*gram!
@nukleos @_elena im not a techie  …i think it depends on how you access news (like which feed) whether or not you can see it?
